Let’s be honest. Your phone buzzes more than a beehive in summer. Emails, texts, breaking news, likes, comments, and that one app that really wants you to play again. We need our phones, but enough is enough sometimes. Personally, I keep my phone on silent, because the constant ping ping drives me crazy. Here’s some good information for you to discern when to pick up your phone (or computer), and when to politely put it down.
Now, imagine for a moment that every single one of those pings, dings, and buzzes is a planetary whisper. In the Cosmic Insights Jyotish app, you can get notifications for the panchanga!
In Vedic astrology, the nine Grahas are constantly sending us signals—some loud and urgent, others soft and subtle. But here’s the secret most people miss: you don’t need your birth chart to know when to scroll and when to stop. You just need to look up at the Moon and consult the Panchanga—the Vedic calendar that tracks five cosmic rhythms.
What is the Panchanga?
The Panchanga is the Vedic almanac, and it’s composed of five “limbs” (or measurements) that together describe the quality of any given moment:
-
Tithi — The lunar day (the phase of the Moon)
-
Vara — The weekday (ruled by a planet)
-
Nakshatra — The lunar constellation the Moon is transiting
-
Yoga — The combination of Sun and Moon positions
-
Karana — Half of a Tithi
But here’s the beautiful thing: you don’t need to master all five to benefit. Just two—Tithi and Vara—are enough to dramatically shift how you engage with your digital world. The Nakshatra adds an extra layer of nuance when you’re ready.
For our purposes today, we’ll focus on these three: Vara (weekday), Tithi (lunar day) , and Nakshatra (Moon’s constellation) . Combine them, and you have a simple, powerful system for knowing exactly when to scroll, when to post, and when to power down.
Part 1: Vara — The Planetary Weekday
Each weekday is ruled by a planet, and that planet’s energy colors everything you do—including how you use your phone.
| Weekday (Vara) | Ruling Planet | Best For… | Avoid… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunday | Sun | Posting achievements, sharing your work, networking with authority figures. A powerful day for visibility. | Scrolling when you’re feeling low—Sun hours amplify ego, both good and bad. Keep it positive. |
| Monday | Moon | Emotional check-ins, connecting with family, sending kind messages. Great for heartfelt content. | Making impulsive purchases or responding to drama. You’re extra sensitive today. |
| Tuesday | Mars | High-energy tasks, competitive games, sending that bold email you’ve been avoiding. | Engaging in online arguments. Mars fuels anger—you’ll say things you regret. Pause before posting. |
| Wednesday | Mercury | Writing, replying to emails, learning new apps, scheduling meetings. Your mind is sharp—use it. | Mindless scrolling. Your intellect wants stimulation, not sedation. |
| Thursday | Jupiter | Expanding your knowledge, reading long-form content, signing up for courses, sharing wisdom. | Gossip or shallow content. Jupiter wants depth, not distraction. |
| Friday | Venus | Connecting with loved ones, appreciating beauty, posting something artistic or romantic. | Shopping, comparing, or stalking exes. Venus hours amplify desire—be mindful. |
| Saturday | Saturn | Deleting apps, unsubscribing from emails, setting boundaries, cleaning up your digital clutter. | Starting new projects or making big announcements. Saturn delays—use it for endings. |
Part 2: Tithi — The Lunar Day
The Tithi is the phase of the Moon relative to the Sun. There are 30 Tithis in a lunar month, split into two fortnights (two week cycles):
-
Shukla Paksha — The waxing Moon (bright fortnight)
-
Krishna Paksha — The waning Moon (dark fortnight)
Each Tithi has its own energy. Here’s a simplified guide:
The Waxing Moon (Shukla Paksha) — Building Energy
During the bright fortnight, energy is expanding. It’s a time for initiation and growth.
| Tithi | Name | Digital Action | Digital Avoidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pratipada | Start something new. Launch a project, post a bold idea. | Don’t procrastinate. This is the seed moment. |
| 2 | Dwitiya | Collaborate. Tag someone, share a friend’s work, build connections. | Don’t isolate. This energy thrives on partnership. |
| 3 | Tritiya | Create. Write, design, film, post your art. | Don’t consume. You’re meant to produce today. |
| 4 | Chaturthi | Organize. Clean your inbox, sort your photos, unfollow dead accounts. | Don’t expand. This is about structure, not growth. |
| 5 | Panchami | Celebrate. Share something joyful, post a win, congratulate others. | Don’t dwell on problems. This is a day for lightness. |
| 6 | Shashthi | Strengthen. Revisit an old project, reply to pending messages, follow up. | Don’t start new things. Build on what exists. |
| 7 | Saptami | Explore. Learn something new, watch a documentary, listen to a podcast. | Don’t stay narrow. Open your mind. |
| 8 | Ashtami | Transform. Delete a habit, unfollow someone toxic, have a hard conversation. | Don’t avoid conflict. This is a day for cutting ties. |
| 9 | Navami | Inspire. Share your wisdom, teach something, mentor someone. | Don’t be selfish. Your knowledge is meant to be shared. |
| 10 | Dashami | Manifest. Post your big vision, articulate your goals, make a public commitment. | Don’t doubt yourself. This is powerful energy. |
| 11 | Ekadashi | Fast. Step away from social media entirely. Use your phone only for calls. | Don’t scroll. This is a sacred day of detox. |
| 12 | Dwadashi | Connect. Reach out to someone you’ve lost touch with, send a kind message. | Don’t broadcast. This is for intimate connection. |
| 13 | Trayodashi | Prepare. Get ready for the full Moon. Organize, plan, and clear space. | Don’t overcommit. Conserve your energy. |
| 14 | Chaturdashi | Release. Let go of grudges, delete old conversations, forgive. | Don’t hold on. This is cleansing energy. |
| 15 (Full Moon) | Purnima | Celebrate. Post your gratitude, share your abundance, bask in the light. | Don’t hide. You are meant to shine tonight. |
The Waning Moon (Krishna Paksha) — Releasing Energy
During the dark fortnight, energy is contracting. It’s a time for completion and release.
| Tithi | Name | Digital Action | Digital Avoidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pratipada | Reflect. Journal in your notes app, review your month, take stock. | Don’t force new beginnings. This is a time of rest. |
| 2 | Dwitiya | Simplify. Unsubscribe, delete, mute, reduce your digital load. | Don’t accumulate. Less is more today. |
| 3 | Tritiya | Observe. Scroll mindfully. Notice what triggers you without reacting. | Don’t engage. Watch without judgment. |
| 4 | Chaturthi | Let go. Delete a conversation you’re holding onto, leave a group chat. | Don’t cling. This is an ending. |
| 5 | Panchami | Rest. Your phone goes into “sleep mode” early. Dim the lights. | Don’t push. Your energy is low—honor it. |
| 6 | Shashthi | Resolve. Finish that draft, send that final email, close a loop. | Don’t open new threads. Finish what you started. |
| 7 | Saptami | Cleanse. Digital detox day. No social media, no news, no notifications. | Don’t cheat. Your soul needs the break. |
| 8 | Ashtami | Confront. Have that difficult text conversation you’ve been avoiding. | Don’t run. This is the day for hard truths. |
| 9 | Navami | Surrender. Post something vulnerable, admit a mistake, ask for help. | Don’t pretend. Authenticity is your power. |
| 10 | Dashami | Complete. Wrap up projects, finish your to-do list, close tabs. | Don’t add to your pile. You’re in the final stretch. |
| 11 | Ekadashi | Fast. Another sacred detox day. Step away from screens entirely. | Don’t scroll. This is the most powerful fasting day. |
| 12 | Dwadashi | Reconnect. Reach out to elders, mentors, or ancestors. Send a gratitude message. | Don’t consume media. This is for soul connection. |
| 13 | Trayodashi | Prepare for the new Moon. Clean your phone, back up your data, reset. | Don’t start anything. You’re in the dark—just prepare. |
| 14 | Chaturdashi | Release. Delete apps, block accounts, let go of digital baggage. | Don’t hold on. The new Moon is coming—make space. |
| 15 (New Moon) | Amavasya | Rest. Your phone stays off. No posting, no scrolling. Honor the darkness. | Don’t push. This is the quietest, most sacred night. |
Part 3: Nakshatra — The Moon’s Daily Constellation
The Moon moves through each Nakshatra for about 24 hours. This is your daily “vibe.” Here’s a simple guide for your digital life:
| Nakshatra Group | Nakshatras | Today’s Vibe | What to Do on Your Phone | What to Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Creative & Expressive | Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika, Rohini, Mrigashira, Ardra, Punarvasu | Fresh starts, planting seeds, creative inspiration | Post new ideas, share your art, start a new project or social media campaign. | Criticizing others’ work. The energy is tender—build up, don’t tear down. |
| Nurturing & Emotional | Pushya, Ashlesha, Magha, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra | Deep feelings, family connections, intuition | Send heartfelt messages to loved ones, journal in a notes app, reflect on your emotions. | Oversharing publicly. Your emotions are raw—keep some things private. |
| Focus & Detail | Swati, Vishakha, Anuradha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha | Concentration, research, clearing clutter | Organize your inbox, delete old photos, unsubscribe from junk mail, do deep work. | Multitasking. Your mind is sharp—choose one thing and do it well. |
| Expansive & Spiritual | Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhishak, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati | Reflection, intuition, spiritual connection | Read something uplifting, listen to a podcast, meditate with a guided app. | News, drama, or anything that triggers anxiety. Your soul needs peace. |
Part 4: How to Use This System Every Day
Here’s your simple daily practice:
Morning: Check today’s Tithi and Vara (weekday). This takes two seconds using any Panchanga app or website.
Morning: Glance at today’s Nakshatra for the overall vibe.
Then: Use the tables above to decide:
-
What’s the best use of my phone today?
-
What should I avoid?
Example: Let’s say it’s Wednesday (Mercury), the Tithi is Dwitiya in Shukla Paksha (waxing, Day 2), and the Moon is in Rohini Nakshatra (creative). Your day is perfect for collaboration, sharing creative work, and writing thoughtful messages. Avoid isolation and negative self-talk.
Part 5: The Eclipses — Your Digital Detox Countdown
The August eclipses (Solar on the 12th in Cancer, Lunar on the 27th/28th in Aquarius) are cosmic clean-up days. Here’s your simple week-by-week guide:
Week 1 (Now): The Purge
-
Delete one app you open without thinking.
-
Unsubscribe from three email lists.
-
Notice how much lighter you feel.
Week 2: The Boundary
-
Turn off all notifications except calls and texts from people you love.
-
Set your phone to “Do Not Disturb” during meals.
-
Feel the silence.
Week 3: The Ritual
-
No phone for 15 minutes after waking up and 15 minutes before sleeping.
-
Look at the sky instead of the screen.
-
Notice your thoughts.
Week 4: The Surrender
-
Ask yourself: What am I afraid to miss?
-
Put your phone in another room for one hour.
-
Notice that the world kept spinning.
The Eclipse Gift
When the Solar Eclipse in Cancer (August 12th) and the Lunar Eclipse in Aquarius (August 27th/28th) arrive, you won’t be scrambling. You’ll be ready. Ready to see what the shadows reveal. Ready to receive the clarity that only comes when the noise is cleared.
The Grahas will always whisper. But you get to choose which notifications you answer—especially when the cosmos is listening.
Shubham astu.
