When I first discovered Vedic astrology, I was terrified of the Sanskrit. My Arabic language background helped, but still. The terminology was quite intimidating.
I came from a Western astrology background, where everything was in English or Latin. Suddenly, I was staring at words like Vimshottari, Navamsa, and Parivartana Yoga—and my brain wanted to run away.
Maybe you’ve felt the same way.
Here’s what I wish someone had told me back then:
You don’t need to become a Sanskrit scholar to practice or benefit from Jyotish.
But learning even a little bit of the language opens doors you didn’t know existed. It connects you to the original source. It deepens your understanding. And it makes you feel like you’re part of an unbroken lineage that stretches back thousands of years.
In this article, I’ll share:
-
A brief history of Sanskrit
-
Why it’s so important in Jyotish
-
A glossary of common terms (so you can finally know what they mean)
-
My best advice for learning at your own pace
Let’s begin.
A Brief History of Sanskrit (The Short Version)
Sanskrit is often called the “language of the gods”—and for good reason. It’s one of the oldest languages known to humanity, with roots going back to the Vedic period (around 1500–500 BCE).
It evolved in two main stages:
-
Vedic Sanskrit – Used in the Vedas, the most ancient sacred texts of Hinduism. This is the language of the Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda.
-
Classical Sanskrit – Standardized around 500 BCE by the brilliant grammarian Pāṇini in his work called the Ashtadhyayi. This is the form of Sanskrit that most scriptures and astrological texts are written in.
Sanskrit was preserved through incredible oral traditions—passed down exactly, syllable by syllable, for generations—before being written down in texts like the Mahabharata, Ramayana, Upanishads, and Puranas.
And yes, Sanskrit influenced many other languages. I studied Arabic for two years during graduate school, and I was amazed to discover how many Arabic words have roots in Sanskrit. That discovery made Sanskrit feel less foreign to me—and I hope it does the same for you.
Why Sanskrit Is So Important in Jyotish
The word Jyotish itself comes from the Sanskrit root Jyoti (light) and Ish (God). So Jyotish literally means the Light of God or the science of light.
That’s beautiful, isn’t it?
Sanskrit isn’t just the language Jyotish happens to be written in. It’s the vessel that carries the wisdom. The ancient sages (rishis) received these teachings in Sanskrit, and the language’s unique qualities make it perfect for astrology.
Linguistic Precision
Sanskrit has an incredibly precise grammar and a vast vocabulary. This means astrological concepts can be described with stunning accuracy. A single Sanskrit word can carry pages of meaning in English.
Vibrational Quality
Sanskrit mantras (like the planetary mantras used in Jyotish) are believed to carry specific vibrational frequencies that resonate with cosmic energies. When chanted correctly, they don’t just describe the planets—they connect you to them.
Direct Access to Source Texts
The foundational texts of Vedic astrology are all in Sanskrit:
-
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra – The core text of Jyotish, attributed to Sage Parashara
-
Jataka Parijata – A comprehensive guide to natal astrology
-
Phaladeepika – Detailed insights into planetary influences
When you learn even a little Sanskrit, you can access these texts directly—without relying on translations that may lose some meaning.
But Here’s the Good News: You Don’t Need to Be Fluent
I want to be honest with you.
It took me five years of watching Jyotish videos and listening to Sanskrit terminology before I felt confident enough to take a course. Five years!
And you know what? That’s okay.
Sanskrit is a lifelong journey. Even advanced scholars are still learning. So if you’re new to Jyotish, please don’t let the terminology threaten you.
You don’t have to memorize everything at once.
Start with a few words. Learn the names of the planets. Then the signs. Then the nakshatras. Bit by bit, it will start to feel like home.
Use the resources you have online. Listen to pronunciations. Write the words down. And be patient with yourself.
You are absorbing an ancient wisdom tradition. That takes time—and that’s exactly how it should be.

My Advice for Learning Sanskrit (Without Burning Out)
If you’re new to Jyotish, here’s what I recommend:
1. Start with the planets.
Learn Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budha, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu, Ketu. Say them out loud. Write them down.
2. Add the signs.
Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna, Karka, Simha, Kanya, Tula, Vrishchika, Dhanu, Makara, Kumbha, Meena.
3. Then learn Lagna and the houses.
Just knowing Lagna (ascendant) and Karma (10th house) will already deepen your understanding.
4. Don’t try to memorize all 27 nakshatras at once.
Learn one a week. Or one a month. They will reveal themselves over time.
5. Listen to pronunciations.
YouTube is your friend. Hearing the words spoken correctly makes them stick.
6. Be patient with yourself.
I took five years. You might take less, or more. There’s no race. The journey is the practice.
Final Thoughts
Sanskrit is not a barrier to Vedic astrology. It’s a doorway.
Yes, it can feel intimidating at first. Yes, there is a lot to learn. But every word you learn connects you more deeply to the original source—to the rishis who received these teachings, to the thousands of years of unbroken tradition, and to the cosmic wisdom that Jyotish offers.
You don’t need to be fluent. You don’t need to pass an exam. You just need to be curious, patient, and willing to learn one word at a time.
The light of Jyotish is waiting for you.
And Sanskrit is the candle.
