I interviewed Vedic astrologer, Edith Hathaway, and in discussing this year’s Saturn Jupiter conjunction on December 20th, she told me the rules she learned from her teacher in Los Angeles, Chakrapani, about the planetary war in Jyotisha called Graha Yuddha. As Vedic astrology is from the Vedas, which was historically transmitted orally and only recently written down, it is important to learn from the esteemed elders of Indian culture who hold the folklore of this tradition. These are the guidelines to determine which planet wins.
1) Graha Yudda means “planetary war”
2) Only 5 planets can be involved: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn
3) When these planets come together within 1 degree there is planetary war
4) The planet of the lower degree is the winner, and the planet of highest degree is the loser
5) The largest planet in size
6) The planet of greatest effulgence (brightness)
7) The fastest planet
8) Saturn always wins over Jupiter because its rings makes it technically larger; so, Saturn always wins
9) Jupiter is the brightest, then Venus, then Mars
10) Mars always loses the planetary war
11) Jupiter does better in fire or water signs
