2003

• Jimmy Carter Receives Noble Peace Prize-Carter was given the prize for dedicating his life promoting peace and democracy and working to advance human rights and social issues. Carter’s greatest achievement came in 1978 during his presidency when he brokered a peace deal between Egypt and Israel, but the majority of his work came after he left office.

• Bombings-Terrorists detonate massive bombs in two nightclubs in Kuta, Bali, killing 202 and injuring over 300.

• Mobs of Muslims Burn the Sabarmati Express Train Killing 57 Hindu Pilgrims

• The Basque terrorist organization ETA continues its bombing campaign in support of its aim for self-determination for the Basque country.

• Death-Restrictions are further loosened for mercy killings and assisted suicide for patients with unbearable, terminal illness in the Netherlands.

• The Department of Homeland Security-George Bush creates on June 7th to fight threats of terrorism

• Human Genome Project-The Human Genome Project is completed during April. Scientists from around the world successfully finished sequencing about 99% of the human genome.

• Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster-The Space Shuttle Columbia disaster takes place on February 1st. NASA’s STS-107 mission carried seven crew members (Rick Husband, William McCool, David Brown, Kalpana Chawla, Michael Anderson, Laurel Clark, and Ilan Ramon) into space where they conducted scientific experiments for 16 days. The Columbia disintegrated upon re-entry, tragically killing all on board.

• Ronaldo’s Manchester United Debut-The Portuguese soccer sensation Cristiano Ronaldo made his Premier League debut for Manchester United during August at the age of 18.

• Final Concorde Flight-The final Concorde flight took place during November. The Concorde was a supersonic, high-end passenger jet that flew at twice the speed of sound. The first Concorde flight took place in 1969 and regular flights began in 1976.

• Iraq Invasion-United States plans for an invasion of Iraq due to an imminent threat from weapons of mass destruction. The United States and the United Kingdom start with their shock and awe campaign with a massive air strikes on military targets in Baghdad before the invasion of Iraq by Land Forces. Saddam Hussein, former President of Iraq, is captured in Tikrit by the U.S. 4th Infantry Division.

• California Politics-Voters recall Democrat Governor Gray Davis from office and elect Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger to succeed him.
