Hindu Mythology
In Jyotish (Vedic astrology), Rahu and Ketu are known as shadow planets or lunar nodes. The origin myth of Rahu and Ketu is described in Hindu mythology, specifically in the story of the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan) found in ancient texts like the Mahabharata and the Puranas.
According to the legend, there was a time when the Devas (celestial beings) and Asuras (demons) decided to join forces to churn the cosmic ocean in order to obtain the nectar of immortality (Amrit). Mount Mandara was used as the churning rod, and the serpent Vasuki became the rope for this great endeavor.
As the churning began, numerous things emerged from the ocean, including various celestial beings, divine weapons, gemstones, and divine beings like Kamadhenu and Ucchaihshravas (the divine cow and horse, respectively). One of the last things to emerge from the ocean was a divine pot of Amrit.
Seeing the nectar, the Devas became greedy and wanted to keep it all for themselves. However, Lord Vishnu, in the form of Mohini (a female enchantress), appeared and took control of the Amrit, ensuring a fair distribution to all the Devas and preventing the Asuras from consuming it.
Rahu, an Asura, was aware of this deception and desired to obtain the nectar to gain immortality. Rahu disguised himself as a Deva and sat among them, hoping to drink the nectar. However, Lord Vishnu recognized his plan and severed Rahu’s head with his Sudarshan Chakra (a divine discus) just as he was about to drink the Amrit. Since Rahu had already consumed a tiny amount of the nectar, his head became immortal, while his body perished.
From that point on, Rahu became an immortal celestial being (graha) who was separated from the rest of his body. His severed head is known as Rahu, and his body became Ketu. In astrology, Rahu and Ketu are considered to be significant celestial entities that represent the ascending and descending lunar nodes respectively. They are believed to have a profound influence on a person’s life and are associated with various karmic influences and challenges.
Exaltation & Debilitation
Rahu and Ketu are not associated with any zodiac sign but are considered as shadowy points where the paths of the Sun and Moon intersect.
However, Rahu is said to have its exalted position in the sign of Taurus (Vrishabha) and its debilitated position in the sign of Scorpio (Vrishchika). On the other hand, Ketu is exalted in Scorpio (Vrishchika) and debilitated in Taurus (Vrishabha).
Regarding their moolitrikona signs, Rahu’s moolitrikona sign is Gemini (Mithuna), and Ketu’s moolitrikona sign is Sagittarius (Dhanu). Please note that moolitrikona sign refers to the sign in which a planet’s energy is strongest after its exalted sign.
