“Karma’s a… well, you know.”
“Instant karma.”
“That’s just bad karma.”
We hear it constantly. Americans have adopted the word karma with enthusiasm, tossing it around like a cosmic hashtag for cause and effect. But here’s the thing few people realize: in Sanskrit, karma is far more nuanced than a spiritual boomerang.
Let me break this down the way Vedic astrology actually teaches it—not as pop philosophy, but as a living map of your soul’s journey.
Karma falls into two broad categories: fixed and unfixed. In Sanskrit, these are known as dridha (fixed, unchangeable) and adridha (unfixed, negotiable). And understanding the difference between them might just change how you see every struggle you’re facing right now.
Fixed Karma: The Script You Were Born With
Fixed karma is what’s already baked in. It’s the karmic baggage you carried into this lifetime from previous ones. No amount of positive thinking erases it, because you already signed the contract before you took this body.
In your Jyotish chart, fixed karma shows up most prominently through three channels:
-
Saturn (Shani): The great taskmaster. Where Saturn sits in your chart, what he aspects, and when his dashas activate—that’s your curriculum. These are lessons you must learn, not avoid.
-
Ketu (South Node): Your past-life mastery and also your past-life exhaustion. Ketu represents what you’ve already done, the skills and patterns etched into your soul. But it also shows where you feel a strange detachment, because you’ve been there, done that.
-
The 6th House: This is the house of obstacles, open enemies, disease, and debt. It’s the arena where your fixed karma plays out in daily, tangible ways.
-
The 12th House: Often misunderstood as simply the house of loss, the 12th is actually the repository of your past lives and the realm of secret enemies—those hidden forces, inner or outer, that quietly work against your peace.
Here’s the crucial point: fixed karma is not a punishment. It’s an inheritance. The planets aren’t conspiring against you; they’re revealing the syllabus your soul enrolled in. If Saturn is transiting your Moon right now, if Ketu sits in your 10th house of career, if your 6th house is heavily activated—this is the script. You don’t get to rewrite it. You get to live it.
Unfixed Karma: Where Your Free Will Lives
Now here’s the part most people miss, and it’s everything.
Unfixed karma is how you respond to the fixed script. It’s your emotional attitude. It’s the texture of your inner world while life is doing what life does. And this, right here, is where your free will actually operates.
Let me give you a real example. I have a good friend, himself an astrologer, who is currently running a difficult Moon-Saturn dasha. He’s trained, skilled, and absolutely ready to work in his field. He applies to job after job. Nothing lands. Weeks turn into months. His family feels the strain.
Now, intellectually, this man understands Jyotish. He can read his own chart. He knows this is a Saturn period, and Saturn takes his time. But emotionally? He’s impatient. He’s frustrated. He’s scared. And that’s human.
But here’s the Jyotish insight: his fixed karma is the job drought. His unfixed karma is his impatience with it. The drought he cannot control. The impatience? That’s his work. That’s the piece of this dasha he’s being asked to meet with awareness, with surrender, with the long view. When he grasps this—when he stops fighting the fixed karma and starts working on the unfixed karma—something shifts. The job may still take time, but the suffering changes shape.
Another example, stark and clear: let’s say you receive a cancer diagnosis. That diagnosis is fixed karma. It’s in the body. It’s arrived. But your response? That’s unfixed karma. Do you pursue medical treatment, whether conventional or alternative? Do you adjust your diet, your rest, your stress? Do you reach out to loved ones, or do you isolate and let the disease consume you without a fight? The diagnosis is destiny. The response is yours.
Reading Unfixed Karma in the Chart
So where does unfixed karma show up astrologically? This is where it gets beautiful.
Unfixed karma is primarily seen through Mars, the Moon, Mercury, and one profoundly overlooked house: the 3rd House.
-
The 3rd House: This is the house of willpower, courage, and sheer personal initiative. It’s often dismissed in Jyotish because it doesn’t feature in the major yogas, but that’s precisely why it’s so important here. The 3rd house is your guts, your solar plexus in the chakras. It’s the part of you that gets up and tries again after a failure. When life delivers fixed karma to your doorstep, the 3rd house determines whether you have the stamina to keep knocking on doors or whether you collapse into passivity. An activated 3rd house doesn’t erase hardship, but it provides the inner fuel to meet it head-on.
-
Mars: This is your action principle. Mars shows how you initiate, how you assert, how you fight. When life delivers your fixed karma, Mars determines whether you stand up or stay down. A strong Mars doesn’t prevent hardship, but it shapes your courage in the face of it.
-
The Moon: In Jyotish, the Moon is the mind. But here’s the subtle teaching: before you have an emotional feeling about something, you must first make a moral decision about it. The mind judges, categorizes, labels. Only then does the heart react. Your Moon shows the filter through which you process reality. A Moon well placed can weather terrible fixed karma with grace. A Moon under affliction can turn minor difficulty into agony.
-
Mercury: The rational intellect. Mercury governs how you make sense of your circumstances. It’s the storyteller in your head. Is your inner narrative one of victimhood or one of meaning-making? Mercury tells the tale, and the tale shapes the attitude, and the attitude is the unfixed karma.
The Big Takeaway
Karma is not a simple law of “what goes around comes around.” It’s a complex, layered architecture of fate and freedom, fixed and unfixed, script and response.
Your Jyotish chart shows you the fixed karma—what’s coming, what’s here, what can’t be avoided. But your daily, moment-by-moment response? That’s the unwritten portion. That’s you, exercising your divine spark of free will.
You can’t always choose the weather. But you can always choose how you walk through it.
