January 21st, 3:54pm EST-NEW MOON at 7 degrees Capricorn, Uttara Ashada
The January 2023 New Moon takes place on January 21 at 3:54pm EST at 7 degrees of sidereal Capricorn, Uttara Ashada. This means “latter victory”, or “latter unconquered”, and spans from 26.4 Sagittarius to 10 degrees of Capricorn. The symbols are an elephant tusk, a small cot, or planks of a bed. The deity that rules this lunar mansion are the Vishvadevas, or all the gods, or “universal gods”. Ganesha is also associated with this nakshatra, as he removes blockages, and clears the path to ultimate victory. The mythology of this star is about the Vishvadevas as the ten sons of the god Dharma, and their super power was to give uncompromising victory. Here we see the mechanics of time, and how our correct behaviors will lead to ultimate victory through the laws of karma, and by doing our dharma we will have great success. If we can conquer our ego, our desires, then we will have ultimate victory. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, and Uttara Ashada is ruled by the Sun, so these two transit planets will be particularly important for today’s New Moon.
Fixed Star Vega
This is the “Universal Star”, and the fixed star Vega in the Lyre constellation rules here. This star is associated with artistic talents, especially for music and acting, but also a liking for good living. Often with eccentric artists, this may lead to a depraved life. The Harp is like Venus and Mercury, and it is said to give an harmonious, poetical and developed nature, fond of music and apt in science and art, but inclined to theft. It can produce frenzied and mad people if they do not control their desires. The Lyre is an airy constellation that has a most marked influence on the weather, at least according to the classicists and the astrological principles. This is also Krishna’s nakshatra, and is included in the mystical 28th nakshatra, Abhijit, that spans from Uttara Ashada into Shravana.
Uttara Ashada in a Birth Chart
If you have your Moon, Ascendant or Sun sign in the nakshatra of Uttara Ashada, then you are probably a workaholic, and have little time for romance or marriage. If married, overworking may cause issues, so try to be more balanced in your work approach. You have great integrity, and will fight for the underdog, and for those in need. You must keep your focus, because if you lose that, you may become lackadaisical and procrastinate. Using your desires in the correct way will bring you good karma, so it’s important to keep your passions going, but don’t be consumed by them. There is an intense drive to succeed here, but without focus it can lead to debauchery. I would say this nakshatra can show bipolar mental health issues, as this condition can show manic-depressive tendencies, overdoing to the point of collapse, then being depressed, a pendulum swing. They need to use their passions for good, and align with the Light, then they can stay in a zealous state and be happy. It’s when they make unhealthy choices that their enthusiasm turns to decadence.
Forecast
On a personal level, this is a very positive New Moon, as it’s the first one of the year, it’s also the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Rabbit. This is a very sensitive and artistic sign, and goes well with Uttara Ashada, so long as we can bridle our passions, we can produce great results. We have Venus in Capricorn for this New Moon, and so we will have the Sun, Moon, Venus and Pluto in conjunction. Luckily, Venus is now almost into Aquarius and not close to Pluto anymore; this can show betrayal in love, but they were conjunct on NYE, so think back to that night and what happened to you. Having Venus close to Saturn, even though he is technically in Aquarius they are still close in the night sky, will put a damper on passions, but this is good for sobering up, and getting some work done.
For the US, the ascendant is Gemini, Punarvasu, so we will feel a “return of the light”, and a new hope and inspiration with this New Moon. If you’ve been struggling, then this is some good news, and you will feel a resurgence of energy, especially now that Mars and Mercury are direct. We’ve had some terrible airline fiascos with travelers getting stranded after flights were cancelled, and have to pay out of pocket for their hotels, rental cars, etc. This occurred when Mars and Mercury were making their painful 6/8 quincunx and both were retrograde. Now we see that communications will be clear again, and these people will get refunded monetarily for their time and expense, as well as the US Secretary of Transportation doing a legal investigation into how this happened . In the US birth chart, this New Moon is in the 7th house of the opponent, so perhaps we will find some resolutions with our adversaries, especially with the war in Ukraine.
Saturn in Aquarius Through the 20th Century
The big news is that Saturn is now in Aquarius, and as he rules Capricorn, that makes this New Moon about him. I’ve talked extensively about what Saturn in Aquarius will mean on my YouTube and TikTok page, but what this next two and a half years will be about is an evolution in consciousness. Aquarius is an air sign, and the last time that we had Saturn here was 1994, and this was the beginning of the internet. This changed everything, as the way we gathered as a collective was altered forever. Saturn is a lonely planet, and when in Aquarius, you can see how it put us into isolation for work online with the herald of the WWW. There will be significant changes in the online world, and AI will certainly be a huge part of this paradigm shift. The time before that he was in Aquarius was 1965, and this really brought on the Peace Movement of the 60’s, as the second half was drastically different than the first half in every aspect. The time before that was 1935, and this was when the Great Depression was at its height, as it was from 1929-39. People had to be innovative to get through those rough times, and that’s exactly what Saturn does in Aquarius. The time before that was 1906, and this was the San Francisco Earthquake that killed 3,000 people, and destroyed much of that city. We see now that California is having a terrible flooding problem all over, and we may see these fault lines open up during this Saturn transit. So you see, every time Saturn is in this sign, there is immense social change going on. The way we think, technological innovations, the land which is ruled by Saturn and things underground will shift drastically.
