In Sanskrit, the word karaka (कारक) means “one who causes or brings about.” It comes from the root kara—”doing” or “making.”
In Jyotish (Vedic astrology), a karaka is a significator—a planet that points to or governs a specific area of your life.
Think of karakas as cosmic job descriptions. Each planet has certain responsibilities. When you look at where that planet sits in your birth chart, you learn about that area of your life—its strengths, its challenges, and its hidden gifts.
The sage Parashara (the father of Vedic astrology) gave us this system of karakas. It’s one of the most important tools for understanding your chart.
Let me introduce you to each planet’s role.
The Nine Planetary Karakas (Navagraha Karakas)
☀️ Surya (Sun) – Rashi Karaka: Individuality & Soul
What it means: Rashi means “sign” or “individuality.” The Sun is the karaka for your sense of self—your core identity, your soul, your ego, your vitality.
In your life: The Sun shows how you express yourself authentically. Where is your natural authority? Where do you need to shine? Its placement reveals your personality, your leadership style, and your life purpose.
Also signifies: Father, power, confidence, health, and the king or government in your life.
🌙 Chandra (Moon) – Karka Karaka: Emotions & Mother
What it means: Karka means “crab” (Cancer, the Moon’s sign) but here it refers to nurturing. The Moon is the karaka for your emotional world—your mind, your feelings, your intuition, and your ability to nurture.
In your life: Your Moon placement reveals how you process emotions, what makes you feel safe, and your deep subconscious patterns. It’s your inner child, your instincts, and your capacity for compassion.
Also signifies: Mother, mental health, home, comfort, and the public (the masses).
♂️ Mangala (Mars) – Bhratri Karaka: Siblings & Courage
What it means: Bhratri means “brother” or “sibling.” Mars is the karaka for siblings, courage, and competition. It represents the fiery, assertive energy that helps you fight for what matters.
In your life: Your Mars placement shows how you handle conflict, take action, and defend your boundaries. It also reveals dynamics with siblings—rivalry, protection, or camaraderie.
Also signifies: Strength, aggression, accidents, land, and the military or police.
☿️ Budha (Mercury) – Matru Karaka: Intellect & Learning

In your life: Your Mercury placement reveals your communication style, your curiosity, and how you process information. Are you analytical? Witty? Scattered? Focused?
Also signifies: Speech, writing, business, trade, and the senses.
♃ Guru (Jupiter) – Jeeva Karaka: Wisdom & Education
What it means: Jeeva means “soul” or “individual consciousness.” Jupiter is the karaka for wisdom, spirituality, and the soul’s growth. It’s the teacher, the guide, the one who expands your horizons.
In your life: Your Jupiter placement reveals your higher purpose, your thirst for knowledge, and your moral compass. It shows where you’re lucky—and where you need to grow.

Yogakaraka Planets: Special Helpers for Each Sign
In addition to the general karakas, each rising sign (Lagna) has a yogakaraka—a planet that rules both a kendra (angular house: 1,4,7,10) and a trikona (trine house: 1,5,9). These planets are especially powerful and beneficial for you.
Here are the yogakaraka planets for each sign:
| Rising Sign (Lagna) | Yogakaraka Planet(s) |
|---|---|
| ♈ Aries | Jupiter (most powerful), Sun, Mars |
| ♉ Taurus | Saturn (rules 9th & 10th), Mercury, Sun, Mars |
| ♊ Gemini | Venus (only karaka) |
| ♋ Cancer | Mars (rules 5th & 10th), Jupiter |
| ♌ Leo | Mars (yogakaraka), Sun |
| ♍ Virgo | Saturn, Venus |
| ♎ Libra | Saturn (yogakaraka), Mercury, Venus |
| ♏ Scorpio | Moon (most influential), Jupiter, Sun |

If you have a yogakaraka planet well-placed in your chart, it acts like a guardian angel for that area of life.
How to Use Karakas in Your Own Chart
Now that you know what each planet signifies, here’s how to work with them:
1. Look at the condition of each karaka planet.
Is it exalted? Debilitated? In its own sign? Receiving good aspects? The stronger the planet, the stronger its karaka area in your life.
2. Look at the house placement.
Where is your Sun (Rashi Karaka)? That house shows where you express your individuality. Where is your Moon (Karka Karaka)? That house shows where you seek emotional security.
3. Look at aspects to the karaka.
A benefic aspect (Jupiter, Venus) on your Saturn can soften hard karma. A malefic aspect (Mars, Saturn) on your Venus can create relationship challenges.
4. Look at the Dasha periods.
When a planet’s Dasha (planetary period) runs, its karaka areas become especially active. For example, during Venus Dasha, love, beauty, and relationships come to the forefront.
A Simple Example
Let’s say someone has:
-
Sun (Rashi Karaka) in the 10th house (career) – They express their identity through their work. Their soul’s purpose is tied to their public life.
-
Moon (Karka Karaka) in the 12th house (spirituality, isolation) – They find emotional comfort in solitude, meditation, or foreign lands. Their mother may have been spiritually inclined or distant.
-
Saturn (Karma Karaka) in the 7th house (relationships) – They have karmic lessons around partnerships. Marriage may come late, but it will be stable and deeply meaningful.
None of this is “good” or “bad.” It’s just information—the map of your soul’s intentions.
Final Thoughts
The karakas are one of the most beautiful and practical tools in Jyotish.
They remind us that the planets aren’t just distant lights in the sky. They are messengers—each carrying a specific piece of the puzzle that is you.
Your Sun shows your soul.
Your Moon shows your heart.
Your Mars shows your fight.
Your Mercury shows your voice.
Your Jupiter shows your wisdom.
Your Venus shows your joy.
Your Saturn shows your lessons.
Your Rahu shows your desires.
Your Ketu shows your release.
When you learn to read them together, you stop asking “What’s wrong with me?” and start asking “What am I here to become?”
And that question changes everything.
