As I write this, the sky is buzzing with a unique and powerful type of cosmic tension. We are currently in the midst of a Graha Yuddha, or “planetary war,” between Mercury (retrograde) and Venus at 28° 2’ of Aquarius, in the nakshatra of Purva Bhadrapada.
This celestial event coincides with a significant moment in our world—the US just engaged in a military conflict with Iran. In Vedic Astrology, we see the macro reflected in the micro, and a planetary war between the planet of diplomacy/communication (Mercury) and the planet of relationships/values (Venus) playing out on the global stage is a potent reminder of how powerful these energies can be.
If we’ve discussed Graha Yuddha during your reading, you might have wondered, “What exactly does it mean for planets to go to war, and who actually wins?” These are not just abstract concepts; they have a profound impact on our lives, influencing everything from decision-making to relationship dynamics.
To shed light on this fascinating topic, I turned to the wisdom of a true expert. In episode #19 of my podcast, Interviews with the Gurus, I spoke with renowned Vedic astrologer Edith Hathaway. She shared the specific rules she learned from her teacher in Los Angeles, the esteemed Chakrapani. To watch the full video (and Edith is great!), go to: Interviews with the Gurus, Ep. #19.
In a tradition like Jyotisha, which was passed down orally through generations of Indian culture before ever being written down, learning from the elders who hold the folklore is invaluable. Here are the guidelines they use to determine which planet emerges victorious in a Graha Yuddha.
The Rules of Celestial Combat
According to the teachings of Chakrapani, as shared by Edith Hathaway, a Graha Yuddha follows a specific set of rules to determine the winner and loser. When these planets come together within one degree of each other, they are engaged in a cosmic battle, and the outcome matters for the charts they influence.
Here are the key factors that decide the victor:
-
It’s an Exclusive Club: Only five planets can participate in a planetary war: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. The Sun and Moon are excluded from this specific type of conflict.
-
The One-Degree Rule: A war is declared when these five planets come together within 1 degree of longitude of each other. This close proximity creates an intense and combined energy that acts like a battlefield.
-
The Power of Position: The planet at the lower degree is the winner, and the planet at the higher degree is the loser. Think of it as the lower-degree planet holding the higher ground. In our current Mercury/Venus war, their specific degrees determine who is commanding the troops.
-
Size Matters: The largest planet in physical size also holds an advantage.
-
The Brightest Light: The planet of greatest effulgence, or brightness, has an edge.
-
Speed is a Weapon: The fastest-moving planet can outmaneuver the others.
The Known Outcomes: Saturn’s Victory and Mars’s Defeat
Beyond these general rules, the tradition also provides some clear, predetermined outcomes based on the planets’ inherent natures:
-
Saturn Always Wins Over Jupiter: This is a fascinating and crucial rule. While Jupiter is the most benefic and expansive planet, Saturn’s physical rings make it technically the largest planet in our solar system. Because of this, in a Graha Yuddha, the heavyweight Saturn always defeats Jupiter.
-
Jupiter’s Brightness: For the record, Jupiter is the brightest planet, followed by Venus, and then Mars.
-
Mars Always Loses: The warrior planet, Mars, known for its aggressive and combative energy, ironically always loses the planetary war. This is a powerful reminder that brute force doesn’t always guarantee victory on the cosmic battlefield.
-
Jupiter’s Elemental Advantage: Jupiter tends to perform better in fire or water signs, which adds another layer of nuance to its strength in a conflict.
Why This Matters for You
When you have a Graha Yuddha happening in your birth chart or in the current transits, it creates a pressurized environment. The affairs of the planets involved become intertwined in a struggle for expression. The “winning” planet will have a stronger say in the outcome, while the “losing” planet’s energy may feel suppressed, challenged, or forced to operate in a difficult way.
During your next reading, if I mention that planets are at war in your chart, you’ll now know that we are looking at a powerful cosmic duel. We’ll analyze which planet is winning based on these ancient rules and, more importantly, how that battle is manifesting in your own life story.
The next time you look up at the night sky, remember—it’s not always a peaceful place. Sometimes, the gods are at war, and their battles shape the world below.
If you’re curious about whether a Graha Yuddha is active in your own birth chart and what it means for you, I’d be happy to take a look. Feel free to reach out and schedule a session.
