Witnessing trauma can be an incredibly challenging and distressing experience, particularly for those who feel helpless to intervene, or whose efforts have been ineffective. Whether it’s witnessing a loved one being abused or experiencing a traumatic event, the feelings of helplessness can have a lasting impact. In a world that often feels hopeless, it’s important for witnesses of trauma to find ways to cope and heal. By acknowledging their feelings and taking proactive steps, individuals can begin the journey of healing and finding hope in a seemingly bleak world. In this article, we will explore five valuable tips for healing as a trauma witness, offering guidance and support for those struggling with the aftermath of witnessing trauma.

1. Seek Support: Witnesses of abuse should seek out professional support such as therapy, support groups, or counseling to help them process their emotions and experiences. Being with others who are processing similar situations is immensely beneficial. Conversely, stay away from those who gas-light the situation, and “blame the victim”.

2. Practice Self-Care: It sounds cliché, but it’s imperative for healing. It’s important for witnesses of abuse to take care of their own physical and mental health by engaging in activities that bring them joy and relaxation, such as exercise, hobbies, or spending time with supportive friends and family. Stepping away from the situation allows for a clear vision once the witness resumes their engagement.

3. Understand It’s Not Their Fault: Witnesses need to remember that they are not to blame for the abuse and that they cannot control the actions of their abuser or the abused. Allowing a space to acknowledge that they cannot control others is a huge step in this healing process. Take legal actions if necessary, or turn to the authorities for help. Turning feelings of helplessness into hope for the victim will empower the witness.

4. Communicate Their Feelings: Witnesses should find a trusted adult or friend to talk to about their feelings and experiences, as keeping emotions bottled up can be harmful to their mental health. While professional therapy is advised, talking with loved ones is also necessary for healing. Writing down their experience is also beneficial. Talking with others of your faith can be comforting.

5. Set Healthy Boundaries: Witnesses should establish healthy boundaries with the abused and the abuser to protect their own well-being, and they should seek help from trusted adults if they are in danger. Taking on others’ feelings can be overwhelming and exhausting, so taking time to step away and recalibrate their own psyche is imperative for the witness to be able to remain steadfast in their support in the long run.
