The Vargas in Jyotish

The Vargas

One of the parts of Vedic astrology that really drew me in when I was first learning about it was the vargas, or divisional charts. In Western astrology only the birth chart and progressed charts are used, but in Jyotish there are 60 charts. The more I study my own divisional charts , the more I am blown away by their accuracy. Β Let’s take a look at what these vargas are, and what they mean. In this article we will give an introduction, and each week discuss each chart individually.

In Jyotish or Vedic Astrology, the term “vargas” refers to divisional charts. There are a total of 16 vargas or divisional charts that are commonly used in Jyotish. These vargas are believed to provide deeper insights and finer details about various aspects of a person’s life.

The selection of these 16 specific vargas is based on their significance and relevance to different areas of life. Each varga is designed to focus on a specific aspect or dimension of a person’s life, giving a more in-depth analysis rather than just relying on the birth chart (D1 chart) alone.

These 16 vargas cover a wide range of topics such as career, wealth, marriage, children, spirituality, and more. They provide a multifaceted understanding of an individual’s life, enabling astrologers to offer comprehensive interpretations and predictions.

While there are 60 potential vargas based on various divisions or harmonics of the zodiac, the decision to use only 16 vargas is due to practical reasons. Using all 60 vargas would involve an extensive calculation process and could lead to an overwhelming amount of information that may not necessarily add significant value to the analysis.

By focusing on the 16 key vargas, astrologers can efficiently analyze the different dimensions of a person’s life and offer meaningful insights. These vargas are carefully chosen to cover the major aspects of human experience, making them a practical and effective tool in Jyotish astrology.

An Accurate Birth Time
In Jyotish or Vedic Astrology, having an accurate birth time is crucial when using vargas or divisional charts. This is because the vargas are constructed based on the precise moment of an individual’s birth, and any discrepancies in the birth time can significantly impact the accuracy of the analysis and predictions.

Vedic Astrology is highly detailed and relies on precise calculations to determine the planetary positions at the time of birth. The divisional charts are derived from the main birth chart (D1 chart) and provide insights into specific areas of life. Each divisional chart is constructed by dividing the main chart into specific divisions, and the planet’s positions in these charts are determined based on the birth time.

The accuracy of the birth time plays a crucial role in determining the exact degree and placement of the planets in the divisional charts. Even a small variation in the birth time can result in different planetary positions in the divisional charts, leading to different interpretations and predictions.

The divisional charts provide in-depth information about various aspects of life, including career, relationships, education, and health. Therefore, an accurate birth time ensures that the divisional charts accurately reflect a person’s life experiences and traits.

Astrologers use the divisional charts along with the main birth chart to gain a holistic understanding of an individual’s life and make accurate predictions. With an incorrect or approximate birth time, the analysis may result in misinterpretations and inaccurate predictions.

Hence, it is essential to provide the most accurate birth time possible when seeking a Jyotish consultation to ensure the divisional charts reflect the true planetary positions and provide precise insights into various aspects of life.
