The D60 Chart in Jyotish: Dharma & The Final Result of All Charts

* The articles in this divisional charts series are meant to give an overview of each of the Vargas for my clients, not an in-depth exploration with examples for other astrologers. All research and writing are done by me. Sources mainly come from my class notes, videos, and the Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra.
In the ancient Indian system of astrology known as Jyotish, there are various tools and techniques used to analyze a person’s birth chart and gain insights into their life and destiny. One such tool is the D60 chart, also known as the Shastyamsa chart. The D60 chart is a divisional chart that is used to provide a more detailed and in-depth analysis of a person’s life and karma, and is the final result that all of the charts can give. The D60 chart is like a magnifying glass that zooms into the intricate details of a person’s life and experiences. This is not meant as an all-encompassing “how to” article for astrologers, but rather positioning the D60 in relation to other divisional charts; in this way, we can see the full breadth of the Vargas, and show clients that follow Western astrology one way that Jyotish is different. Remember that a firm birth time is essential to use this chart, or any chart beyond the D1 in Jyotish.
It is derived by dividing each sign of the zodiac into 60 equal parts, resulting in a chart with 60 divisions or sectors. To calculate the D60 lagna in Jyotish, you first need to determine the position of each planet in the birth chart and then divide the zodiac sign into 60 equal parts or divisions. Each division equals 6 degrees of the zodiac sign. Once you have the degrees for each planet, you can calculate the D60 lagna by dividing the total degrees by 60.
For example, if the ascendant is in 10 degrees of Aries in the D1 birth chart, the D60 lagna would be 10/60 = 0 degrees of Aries in the D60 chart. Similarly, you can calculate the D60 lagna for each planet and house in the birth chart to get a comprehensive analysis of the native’s life events and experiences from a more detailed perspective.
The D60 chart is an important tool in Vedic astrology that provides deeper insights into a person’s life than the D1 chart (the main birth chart). While the D1 chart gives a general overview of a person’s life and characteristics, the D60 chart delves into the finer details and nuances of individual experiences and karma. It can be used in conjunction with the D1 chart to provide a more comprehensive analysis of a person’s life events, strengths, weaknesses, and potential challenges. In some cases, astrologers may rely more heavily on the D60 chart if they believe it holds more specific and accurate information, especially in predicting precise timings of events or assessing the impact of planetary transits.
Sage Parashara has left us many gems of knowledge in his Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra text on how to interpret this incredible chart, but basically, the D60 chart can be used just like the D1 chart, in that you will look to it for nuances in personality development, spiritual growth, and also how transits will impact the individual; think of it as the companion chart to the D1, as it can be used throughout the whole life, whereas the D9 chart is only valid after the age of 40 or so. As the number suggests, this chart has to do with the 6thhouse in the D1 chart, which is where all past life karma is put, which determines your dharma, or your duty in this lifetime. So, paying attention to the 6th house in the D60 chart is imperative, such as 6thhouse lord & placement, nakshatra, as well as any planets in the 6thhouse, as this will give hints as to what karma & dharma the person has, and where it is placed in their life.
How To Differentiate Twins – The D60
In twins’ birth charts, the use of the D60 chart becomes especially important in differentiating between the two individuals. Since twins are born at almost the same time and location, their birth charts will be very similar. However, the D60 chart helps astrologers to pinpoint the subtle differences in the twins’ karma and life experiences. The D60 chart can reveal the inherent strengths and weaknesses of each twin, as well as their unique talents, challenges, and opportunities. By examining the D60 chart alongside the main birth chart, astrologers can provide a more personalized and accurate analysis for each twin.
For example, one twin may have a strong D60 chart indicating success and prosperity in their career, while the other twin may have a challenging D60 chart indicating obstacles and delays in their professional life. Similarly, the D60 chart can shed light on the twins’ relationships, health, and overall life path. The lagna will usually be different for each twin in their D60, and this shows how they look differently from each other, and then where that lagna lord goes will show more depth into these distinctions.
