The D45 chart, also known as the Akshavedamsa chart, is a unique and powerful tool in Jyotish, or Vedic astrology. It is a divisional chart that is used to provide deeper insights into a person’s patrineal karma, spiritual evolution and their karmic tendencies. In this article we will examine the meaning of the D45, and briefly touch upon the house meanings, and planetary placements, as well. This is not meant as an all-encompassing “how to” article for astrologers, but rather positioning the D45 in relation to other divisional charts; in this way, we can see the full breadth of the Vargas, and show clients that follow Western astrology one way that Jyotish is different. Remember that a firm birth time is essential to use this chart, or any chart beyond the D1 in Jyotish.
The D45 chart is derived by dividing each sign of the zodiac into 45 equal parts, resulting in a chart that has 45 divisions. Each division is associated with a specific aspect of a person’s life, and the chart as a whole provides a detailed and comprehensive analysis of the individual’s spiritual journey. One of the key features of the D45 chart is its focus on the individual’s spiritual growth and evolution. By examining the placement of planets in this chart, an astrologer can gain insight into the person’s spiritual practices, past life karma, and their potential for spiritual awakening in this lifetime. paternal lineage, luck, and psychological characteristics of an individual. As the patrilineal karmas are seen in this varga, the Sun, 5th house, and 9th house are particularly important to analyze, as well as the lagna lord.
The D45 chart also provides valuable information about the individual’s karma and the lessons they are meant to learn in this lifetime. By analyzing the planetary placements in this chart, an astrologer can identify the challenging karmic patterns that a person may be grappling with inherited by the father’s family, as well as the opportunities for growth and transformation. This is one of the Shodasha Vargas, which in antiquity was solely used for kings or heads of state, and common people were not privy to this information.
The alignment of benefic planets with the Sun in the D45 chart indicates strong and supportive paternal relationships, while malefic conjunctions may hint at challenges or conflicts originating from the father’s side. This intricate analysis not only sheds light on past experiences but also offers guidance on future prospects and potential obstacles, helping individuals navigate life’s journey with clarity and wisdom.

Example
Let’s say someone has their Sun in Aquarius, Dhanishta nakshatra in the 7th house of the D45 chart, making Leo, Purva Phalguni their ascendant. This implies that their patrilineal karma is about breaking free from family traditions (Aquarius), and learning how to make money, but also retain their creativity, particularly with music, or even making money with music (Dhanishta). As the Sun is the most important planet in the chart, and the Sun as the ruler of Leo is their lagna lord, or chart ruler, implies that the father’s family was very involved in the early childhood of this person, and in Purva Phalguni there was much joy and merry-making, perhaps given to indulgence sometimes. Having the Sun in the 7th house shows that the father’s family placed a lot of importance upon marriage, but again in Aquarius, for this person it’s going to be about an unconventional approach to marriage in this lifetime.
