* The articles in this divisional charts series are meant to give an overview of each of the Vargas for my clients, not an in-depth exploration with examples for other astrologers. All research and writing are done by me. Sources mainly come from my class notes, videos, and the Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra.

The D40 chart, also known as the Khavedamsa chart, is a unique and important aspect of Vedic astrology, known as Jyotish. In Jyotish, the D40 chart is used to determine the overall strength and significance of a person’s spiritual path and evolution, and the matrilineal karma. In this article we will examine the meaning of the D40, and briefly touch upon the house meanings, and planetary placements, as well. This is not meant as an all-encompassing “how to” article for astrologers, but rather positioning the D40 in relation to other divisional charts; in this way, we can see the full breadth of the Vargas, and show clients that follow Western astrology one way that Jyotish is different. Remember that a firm birth time is essential to use this chart, or any chart beyond the D1 in Jyotish.

The D40 chart is derived from the main birth chart, or Lagna chart, by dividing each sign into 40 equal parts. Each part represents a specific aspect of one’s spiritual life, such as devotion, discipline, wisdom, and enlightenment. The D40 chart helps astrologers better understand a person’s spiritual potential and challenges, as well as the karmic lessons they are meant to learn in this lifetime. This chart is one of the Shodasha Vargas, which are D4, D20, D24, D27, D40, and D45; in antiquity they were only used for Kings, so ordinary laymen did not have the privilege of this kind of knowledge.

One of the key benefits of the D40 chart is that it provides insights into a person’s deeper spiritual nature and purpose by taking a deeper look at the D1 4thhouse. By analyzing the placements of planets and houses in the D40 chart, astrologers can uncover the unique spiritual gifts and talents that a person possesses, as well as the spiritual challenges they may face. Conversely, a person with challenging placements in the D40 chart may struggle with issues related to faith, belief, or spiritual growth that are based on the karma of the mother’s ancestors. They may need to work on developing qualities such as patience, humility, or forgiveness in order to overcome their karmic obstacles and progress on their spiritual path.

For example, a person with a strong Jupiter which is exalted in the Moon’s sign of Cancer in the D40 chart may have a natural inclination towards spirituality, wisdom, and higher knowledge. They may excel in fields related to teaching, philosophy, or religion, and may be drawn to practices such as meditation, yoga, or astrology to deepen their spiritual connection.

This chart delves into the matrilineal karma of the individual, uncovering the intricate relationship between the native and their mother or maternal ancestors. It unveils both the blessings and challenges that stem from this connection, and therefore the Moon is the most important planet in this chart, and the 4thhouse whose natural ruler is the Moon. Acting as a window into the superconscious mind, this chart is a repository of thought patterns and evolutionary data from past lives. Through studying this chart, one can gain a deeper understanding of how auspicious the ascendant, planets, and houses in the natal chart truly are.
