The D27 Chart in Jyotish: Unveiling Strengths Gained in PastLives

* The articles in this divisional charts series are meant to give an overview of each of the Vargas for my clients, not an in-depth exploration with examples for other astrologers. All research and writing are done by me. Sources mainly come from my class notes, videos, and the Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra.

The Bhamsa D27 chart in Jyotish is a prominent divisional chart that provides valuable insights into an individual’s spiritual and psychic abilities, as well as their strengths and past life karmas. In Hindu astrology, the D27 chart is considered one of the most important divisional charts, as it maps into the 3rd house and signifies an individual’s strengths and protection. In this article we will examine the meaning of the D27, and briefly touch upon the house meanings, and planetary placements, as well. This is not meant as an all-encompassing “how to” article for astrologers, but rather positioning the D27 in relation to other divisional charts; in this way, we can see the full breadth of the Vargas, and show clients that follow Western astrology one way that Jyotish is different. Remember that a firm birth time is essential to use this chart, or any chart beyond the D1 in Jyotish.

Mars, the significator of the D27 chart, plays a crucial role in shaping the individual’s strength and safeguarding them from negative experiences. The D27 chart aims to shield the individual from negativity and pass on positive results, indicating the protective nature of Mars. The division of each Rashi (sign) into 27 parts in the D27 chart maps into a specific nakshatra, further emphasizing the influence of nakshatras in shaping an individual’s strengths and protection. Each sign maps out all nakshatras, starting with Ashwini and ending with Revati.

The positioning of planets in the D27 chart and their mapping to nakshatras can give deeper insights into how an individual’s life is influenced by these celestial entities. For instance, if a planet such as Venus maps to a particular nakshatra in the D27 chart and the natal Mercury is in the same nakshatra, it indicates a significant influence of Venus on Mercury. Additionally, shared mappings of two or more planets suggest a common agenda and interconnected influences in an individual’s life.

By studying the mapping of nakshatras in the D27 chart and considering their connections with Nava Tara and Nadi Nakshatras, astrologers can gain a deeper understanding of the influences shaping an individual’s strengths and protection. For example, if an individual’s Sun is positioned in a specific division of the D27 chart that maps into a particular nakshatra, it is advisable to check for any planets in the same nakshatra in the D1 chart. Furthermore, observing the transits of the Sun in the respective nakshatra and the influence of prominent planets in that nakshatra can provide valuable insights into potential challenges and unhappiness.

In contrast to the D27 chart, the D30 chart maps into the 6th house and showcases an individual’s weaknesses and negatives, with Saturn as its significator.
