Video:  September 17, 2020 New Moon in Virgo, Uttara Phalguni

September 17th, 7:00am EDT-New Moon: 1 degree Virgo, Uttara Phalguni

The September 17th, 2020 New Moon takes place at exactly 7am EDT at 0 degrees 52 minutes of Virgo, Uttara Phalguni nakshatra. This means “the later reddish one” and spans from 26.4 degrees of Leo to 10 degrees of Virgo. The symbol is a bed with four legs, or a hammock, and the deity that rules this lunar mansion is Aryaman, one of the Aditiyas, who rules patronage, kindness, and favors; the deities Bhaga and Aryaman are invoked together. This is the “Star of Patronage” and corresponds to the fixed star Denebola, which sits in the Lion’s tail of the Leo constellation. It is noble, generous, gives a quick mind and high honors, but can be associated with people of bad reputation. Virgo is ruled by Mercury, and Uttara Phalguni is ruled by the Sun, so that makes these two transit planets the stars of this New Moon. In Persian astrology Denebola is ruled by Saturn and Venus.

It is also Pitru Paksha, or the Fortnight of the Ancestors.  Shradh or Pitru Paksha is a period of 16 days when Hindus pay homage to their ancestors, especially through food offerings. According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that after death soul has to wander in the various worlds. Therefore, Pitru Paksha is an occasion to pacify the departed ancestors by performing Shradh. It is a ritual to repay debts to the ancestors.

This year, Pitru Paksha commences on the Full Moon, September 2, 2020, on Bhadrapada Purnima and culminates on the New Moon, September 17, 2020. The last day of Pitru Paksha is known as Sarvapitri Amavasya or Mahalaya Amavasya. Mahalaya Amavasya is the most significant day of Pitru Paksha.

Meaning of Shradh

Shradh is originally is derived from two Sanskrit words, is a combination of two words “Sat” meaning truth and “Adhar” meaning basis. Therefore, it refers to the act that is performed with all sincerity and faith. An offering made with utmost ‘shraddha’ or devotion.

Mythology & Characteristics of People Born with Uttara Phalguni

The deity Aryaman governed marriage contracts and protected family inheritance; Shiva and Shakti were married under this star. People who are born with this as their Moon sign or other significant placement will place friendship extremely high on their priority list, and they are immensely helpful individuals. They place their family at the center of their lives and are overly concerned with keeping the family unit together and strong. They have a very caring nature and are always involved in improving their communities as they have a great love of humanity. These people love to be married but can often sacrifice their individuality for the sack of union, which creates co-dependent relationship patterns. They hate to be alone, so the best thing for these people is to work with the public and serve to fulfill this need, and often can be found in public office. They can be controlling and stubborn if they do not feel recognized for their sacrifices.

The Fixed Star Denebola

Denebola at sidereal 28°37′ Leo has an orb of 2°10′

The fixed star Denebola is of the nature of Saturn and Venus (slovenly, very immoral, shameless, revolting, mean, sorrows in love.) It gives swift judgment, despair, regrets, public disgrace, misfortune from the elements of nature, happiness turned to anger, and makes its natives noble, daring, self-controlled, generous, and busy with other people’s affairs. [1]

Denebola in the Tail of the Lion has a Uranian nature and it is supposed that in mundane horoscopes, major catastrophes are triggered off by it. Depending on the position and aspect to other stellar bodies in a personal chart, either great success or great failure are credited to this star. Found on the Ascendant and especially in company with Mercury, a quarrelsome nature, with a liking for legal action, is attributed to Denebola. It could also mean that this star is the cause of extremely exciting events. Badly placed in the chart with Mercury or Uranus, mental diseases (mostly incurable ones) are indicated. Fine aspects, however, will further work connected with matters of reform and progress. [2]

Ptolemy gave Denebola a Saturn-Venus quality, which must make it at least mildly benefic even in traditional astrology, since Venus was held to be the only planet that could really get along with Saturn. The tails of the celestial creatures are at least as important as their heads, being in some cases their weaponry (Scorpio), in others their means of communication (Cetus, the Whale), in others their link to the past and of course, sometimes ‘the part we don’t talk about’!

The Lion’s tail has the quality of being farthest from the end that one should not approach unwarily, and so it has a Venusian quality of peace and safety about it, but we should still not be tempted into ‘pulling the lion’s tail’, as vernacular saying has wisely warned. Therein lies the Saturn quality of Denebola.

We should expect, therefore, that this star symbolizes strength from the Lion, along with both the ability and the need to use it wisely and constructively. There should also be the note of looking forward while at the same time being able to draw upon past experience, gained at the head end of the animal, so to say, since this Lion faces back down the Zodiac.

Perhaps the ‘Achilles heel’ of monarchs, even the most progressive of them, is that their positions are so much steeped in past tradition that it is all too difficult to come forward from it, even if they want to. Thus, from this special forward-looking attribute of Denebola, we might well ponder that one with this star strong in their horoscope is at least well favored, and possibly more so, in our times – than with the mighty Regulus at his service. And those are indeed the qualities of Denebola. [3]

In classical and medieval times, a man’s misfortune and disgrace was generally attributed to a woman. This perhaps explains the bad reputation of so many Venusian stars such as Denebola. However, in this instance the indications are for a noble and generous individual and the misfortune is apt to stem from this nobility of character. [4]

Denebola rules the front of the chest in the human body. [5]

Leo Constellation

In mundane astrology Leo Constellation is associated with royal events especially the ascension or death of kings and queens, the election or death of heads of state, assassinations, uprisings and massacres, currency and the stock exchange, the Vatican and European Union.

The Fixed Star Zavijava at 3°06′ Virgo has an orb of 1°30′

Fixed star Zavijava is of the nature of Mercury and Mars (exaggerative, argumentative, unreliable, unscrupulous, given to invective, mechanical ability, very quick mind, great talker.) It gives beneficence, force of character, strength, combative movements and destructiveness.

A pale yellow star situated below the head of Virgo. From Al Zawiah, the Angle or Corner (see Zaniah), but according to Bullinger, the name means the Gloriously Beautiful. Symbolically called “Correct Weighing”. [1]

Both Zaniah and Zavijava have a good astrological reputation following closely their natures as indicated by their stellar spectra. [2]

The second star of Virgo by Greek-letter rating, β Virginis, is not actually the second brightest; its current visual magnitude is 3,8, whereas there are several others between 2.9 and 3. This star is alternatively named Zavijava or Al Araf (or Alraph). It is not surprising that Ptolemy gave it the very Leonine qualities of a Mercury-Mars star. Of the names, Zavijava probably derives from Al Zawiyah which among other things means a small Mosque subsidiary to a larger one nearby. Since such a Mosque is very much a symbol of authority in its locality, as a parish church is in other communities, the idea conveyed here is of someone holding a position of command but subject to a higher command behind them.

Al Araf conveys the same notion in another way, being a much diminished corruption of an original which meant: ‘Those who send forth (others to carry out their orders)’, or: ‘Those who are Sent forth…’.That seems a very logical notion for the star which carries us on from Leo, symbol of commanding others, into Virgo where we work for those who have command over us. The Mercury-Mars quality perhaps suggests more of the Leo nature, the intelligent director behind the action, but the name can just as well imply that ‘the successful applicant will work in the field on his own initiative, directly responsible to the M.D.’, as current top-job adverts put the matter. The planetary smile therefore suggests one who has the intelligence and energy to be sent out and not need a higher authority to lead him all the time.

And so the qualities we find in people with this star very precisely engaged upon their horoscopes (it is faint, with small orb), are those of a reliable worker, attentive to every detail of the job, able to control this if the star and its companion planet is well aspected, so that he will make a good salesman, executive, manager or subordinate commander, but needs someone of higher rank to have given him the job. If less well aspected he can be the sort of underling who provokes his men to strike or mutiny by over-playing the ‘little Hitler’ act. His own downfall is then assured. If he does have that harder aspect there, however, he can best use it by avoiding controlling others, taking on instead something like painstaking research in difficult fields where there are few people or sources to guide him.

Several more stars, not in the Zodiacal constellation, lie very close to Al Araf by longitude: Labrum, the lip of Crater the CupAlkaid, the Head Man in the locality, an Ursa Major star; and Markeb the Boat, in the Argo Constellation. All these have to do with swearing loyalty to another, taking charge under him, and’running the ship’ for him. [2]

Zavijava star rules the center of the pancreas in the human body. [4]

Constellation Virgo

Ptolemy makes the following observations; “The stars in the head of Virgo, and that at the top of the southern wing, operate like Mercury and somewhat like Mars: the other bright stars in the same wing, and those about the girdle, resemble Mercury in their influence, and also Venus, moderately . . . those at the points of the feet and at the bottom of the garments are like Mercury, and also Mars, moderately.” By the Kabalists it is associated with the Hebrew letter Gimel and the 3rd Tarot Trump “The Empress.” [1]

This constellation is indicative of an abundance in harvest and a fruitfulness of agriculture in general. But when prominent in the charts of eclipses it portends events concerning kings (heads of state) and in this regard can be an ill omen indeed. [2]

In astrology this constellation and Gemini were the House of Mercury. But usually, and far more appropriately, Virgo’s stars have been given over to the care of Ceres, her namesake, the long-time goddess of the harvest. For her astrological colors Virgo assumed black speckled with blue; and was thought of as governing the abdomen in the human body, but always as an unfortunate, sterile sign. The appearance of a comet within its borders implied many grievous ills to the female portion of the population. [5]

Transit Analysis

On this last New Moon of the Rahu in Gemini and Ketu in Sagittarius phase we have the Sun and Moon sitting with Mercury in Virgo, and in Washington DC it is taking place in the day’s first house, or ascendant. As Mercury is in his own sign of Virgo and exalted this makes a Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga, or one of the combinations of planets that makes a “great man”. This is the Bhadra Yoga, which gives intelligence, good communication, witticism, and a sharp intellect.

We have a second Mahapurusha Yoga called a Hamsa Yoga, as Jupiter is in his own sign of Sagittarius in the day’s 4thhouse. Jupiter just went direct so his energy is extraordinarily strong right now. This means the words of spiritual and political leaders in DC will be very persuasive at this time, and particularly for the Democrats, as the sign of Sagittarius corresponds to this political party.

Saturn retrograde is in his own sign of Capricorn, and Mars retrograde is in his own sign of Aries. This is an exceedingly rare occurrence and indicates powerful change if harnessed properly.

The sign of Virgo is about health and healing and having Ketu gandanta in the 4th house shows there is a healing coming to the homeland. There has already been reports in the news about a vaccine being ready as soon as November, but some have said this is just a political ploy. This Star of Patronage is asking us to think of others right now and help out our communities that are in great need because of this pandemic. Having Mercury exalted right now, and the ruler of this New Moon should bring better communication, and also more intelligent discussion surrounding this health crisis.

Pisces, this New Moon is a great time to give thanks to your partners in all areas of your life, and if you are married then do something for your spouse to show appreciation. Your speech has been angrier and more aggressive lately, so if you have directed it towards your loved ones then now is the time to rectify the situation. Money may suddenly come to you now that is owed to you, perhaps by family. The next 18 months will be about your communications and media, short distance travel, siblings, and friends, learning something new and even going back to school. Things have been really intense in your career this summer; you have uncovered the manipulations of those you work with and had to let go of some relationships. Your children are happy, and if not married then love affairs will bring a lot of joy. Creative projects and speculations could bring you money, as well. You learn a lot from elders and traditions in your career, and by the end of the month you will be more authoritative there. Your dreams have probably been pretty wild this year and a source of escapism, but listen to them as they are trying to tell you truths that are hidden from you.
