The Flow of Universal Life Energy: An Introduction to Reiki

Hello, and welcome. As a master level Reiki practitioner since 2014, I’m often asked: “What exactly is Reiki?” At its heart, Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a gentle yet profound Japanese healing technique for stress reduction, relaxation, and holistic well-being. The word itself comes from two Japanese concepts: “Rei,” meaning universal or spiritual wisdom, and “Ki,” meaning life force energy. Essentially, Reiki is the channeling of this universal life force energy to support the body’s innate healing abilities.
In a session, a practitioner acts as a conduit for this energy, placing their hands lightly on or just above the recipient’s body. The energy flows where it is most needed, working to balance the mind, body, and spirit. It’s not a substitute for medical treatment, but a beautiful complement, often helping to ease anxiety, promote peace, and support physical healing processes.
The Reiki Principles: A Philosophy for Life
Beyond the hands-on practice, Reiki offers a simple philosophy for mindful living, encapsulated in five principles:
- Just for today, I will not worry.
- Just for today, I will not be angry.
- Just for today, I will be grateful.
- Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
- Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.
The Wider World of Energy Work
While Reiki is a specific, structured system, it exists within a vast and ancient landscape of energy healing traditions. Understanding different modalities can help you find what resonates with you. Here are a few other beautiful forms of energy work:
- Pranic Healing: A comprehensive system that utilizes “prana” (a Sanskrit term for life force) to cleanse, energize, and balance the body’s energy field or aura. It involves specific sweeping techniques to remove diseased energy and energizing methods to facilitate healing, often performed without direct touch.
- Quantum Touch: This modality focuses on using life force energy (chi) and specific breathing techniques to amplify resonance and vibration in the body. The practitioner aims to raise the energy levels in an area, allowing the body’s intelligence to use that energy for healing.
- Healing Touch & Therapeutic Touch: These are nurse-founded, evidence-informed energy therapies that influence the human energy system. Practitioners use their hands to clear, energize, and balance the client’s energy field to support physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health.
- Qigong (Chi Kung): An ancient Chinese practice of cultivating and balancing life force energy through gentle movements, meditation, and focused intention. Medical Qigong is specifically used for healing purposes.
- Crystal Healing: This practice utilizes crystals and stones, each believed to possess specific vibrational frequencies, to interact with the human energy field. They may be placed on the body or used in the surrounding space to draw out negative energy, promote balance, and support intention.
- Sound Healing: Uses vibrational tools like singing bowls, gongs, tuning forks, and chanting. The sound waves are thought to entrain the brainwaves and frequency of the body’s cells into states of deep relaxation and harmony.
Finding Common Ground
While techniques differ, most energy work systems share core beliefs:
- A universal, intelligent life force energy exists and sustains all living things.
- Imbalances or blockages in the flow of this energy can lead to physical, emotional, or spiritual distress.
- By influencing this energy field, we can support the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
How to Choose What’s Right for You
The best modality is the one you feel drawn to and that yields positive results for you. Consider:
- Your intuition: What are you naturally curious about?
- Your needs: Are you seeking deep relaxation, emotional release, or support for a specific physical issue?
- The practitioner: A qualified, empathetic, and professional practitioner is often more important than the specific modality.
The Path of Learning: Reiki’s Lineage and Attunements
It’s important to understand that Reiki is not a technique one can learn from a book or video alone. It is a wisdom tradition passed directly from teacher to student through a sacred process called an attunement. An attunement is a ceremony performed by a Reiki Master that opens and aligns the student’s energy channels to become a conduit for the Reiki energy. This initiation creates a lifelong connection to the Reiki source and is what differentiates Reiki from other forms of hands-on healing. Training is typically divided into three levels (I, II, and Master/Teacher), each with its own attunements, symbols, and teachings. This ensures the integrity and potency of the practice are maintained through a clear lineage, connecting each practitioner back to the system’s founder, Dr. Mikao Usui.
A Crucial Distinction: What Reiki & Ethical Energy Work Are NOT
In the spirit of clarity and empowerment, it’s vital to address not only what ethical energy healing is, but also what it is decidedly NOT. As practitioners and recipients, understanding these boundaries protects the integrity of the practice and the well-being of everyone involved.
The Sacred Conduit Principle
At the core of Reiki and most authentic energy healing systems is the principle that the practitioner serves as a clear conduit or channel. The healing energy is universal—it flows from the Divine Source (however you may name or understand it: the Universe, God, the Highest Good, Pure Consciousness) through the practitioner and to the recipient. Think of it like a clean, hollow bamboo pipe allowing water from a pure spring to flow freely.
This means two absolutely critical things:
- The Practitioner Does NOT Give You Their Personal Energy.
A properly trained practitioner is trained to connect to the source, ground themselves, and allow energy to flow through them without depleting their own life force. A session should leave both the giver and receiver feeling replenished and balanced, not drained. If a practitioner claims they are “giving you their energy” or ends sessions feeling exhausted and depleted, this indicates a fundamental misunderstanding of the practice and a risk of energetic burnout for them. - The Practitioner Should NEVER Ask For or Take Your Energy.
This is the most critical warning sign. There is no scenario in ethical Reiki or any legitimate energy healing where a practitioner needs to “take,” “borrow,” or “use” your personal life force energy. Any suggestion or technique that implies this is a serious red flag. Run if this occurs to you.
Understanding “Vampiric” or Parasitic Manipulation
In energy work circles, the term “vampiric” or parasitic manipulation refers to a dynamic where one person, consciously or unconsciously, siphons or exploits another’s vital life force for their own gain—be it for a sense of power, to feed their own energy depletion, or to create an unhealthy bond of dependency.
How to Recognize Unethical Practices:
- A practitioner who claims they are “taking on” your illness or negativity into their own body.
- Any technique framed as “pulling energy out of you” that feels violent, draining, or frightening.
- A practitioner who seems energized at your expense, leaving you feeling unusually weak, dizzy, or emotionally raw long after the session.
- Creating a dynamic of dependency, suggesting only they can help you, or that you need endless sessions with them to stay “cleared.”
- Any exchange that feels coercive, invasive, or secretive.
Your Rights as a Recipient
In a safe, ethical session:
- You Feel Empowered, Not Enervated: Afterward, you should feel more like yourself—calmer, clearer, and more centered, not stripped of your vitality.
- You Are in Control: You can always ask about the techniques being used. A qualified practitioner will gladly explain their process in a transparent way.
- You Retain Your Sovereignty: The goal of energy work is to help you balance your own energy system, strengthening your connection to your own source of vitality and inner wisdom. It should never make you feel weaker or more dependent on the practitioner.
Choosing a Practitioner with Integrity
Always trust your intuition. A true healer operates from a place of service, humility, and clear boundaries. Their role is to facilitate your connection to healing energy, not to act as a perpetual power source or to create a debt—energetic or otherwise.
Energy work, at its best, is a sacred trust. By understanding these boundaries, we honor the purity of the practice and ensure it remains a safe, empowering, and luminous path to wellness.
What to Expect in a Reiki Session with Me: A Holistic Journey
Welcome. If you’re considering a session, you might wonder what the experience will be like. My approach is deeply intuitive and personalized, blending traditional Reiki with my clairvoyant and mediumship abilities to offer a comprehensive view of your energetic landscape. Here’s a step-by-step guide to a typical session.
Step 1: The Consultation – Setting Intention
Every session begins with a conversation. We’ll sit comfortably and discuss what brings you in. Are you seeking relief from stress, emotional clarity, support for a physical condition, or simply a tune-up? Your intention guides the entire session. This is a collaborative space where your voice is the most important.
Step 2: The Clairvoyant Scan – Assessing Your Energy Field
With your permission, I will then perform an initial closed-eye scan of your energy. As a psychic medium, I perceive energy visually, audibly, and intuitively. During this scan, I am connecting to the guidance that surrounds you and looking for:
- Areas of Density or “Dark Spots”: These are not to be feared, but are indicators of where energy may be stagnant, blocked, or where the body is holding tension, past trauma, or the early whispers of imbalance. This is where I often find energetic precursors to physical or emotional issues.
- The Chakra System: I assess the seven main chakras for their spin, color, and vitality, noting which are overactive, underactive, or in harmony.
- The Auric Field & Anchor Points: I examine the layers of your aura (the electromagnetic field around your body) for integrity and tears. Specifically, I look at two key anchor points:
- The “Mother” Anchor: Located slightly left of center in your field, this point often relates to received nurturing, ancestral lineage on the maternal side, and your connection to intuition and receptivity.
- The “Father” Anchor: Located slightly right of center, this point often relates to structure, action, ancestral lineage on the paternal side, and your connection to manifestation and outward expression.
These anchors can reveal patterns inherited or learned from these archetypal energies, and will show any imbalance with your parents.
Step 3: The Discussion – Translating the Vision
I will then share what I’ve perceived in clear, compassionate language. This isn’t about instilling fear, but about empowering you with awareness. We’ll discuss how these energetic patterns might relate to your life experiences, emotions, or physical sensations. You are always encouraged to ask questions, confirm, or offer your own insights.
For Longer or “Deep Dive” Sessions: Many clients choose to integrate Vedic Astrology or Tarot at this point into hour long sessions. Your natal chart can provide profound context for your life themes and challenges, while a Tarot spread can offer clarity on a specific situation. This creates a powerful, multi-layered understanding of your “issue” from soul, mind, and body perspectives.
Step 4: The Healing – Grounding and Reiki
Once we have a shared understanding, the hands-on (or hands-over) healing begins.
- Getting Comfortable: For full sessions, you’ll lie fully clothed on a comfortable massage table. For shorter sessions, you may choose a supportive chair.
- Tuning Forks & Grounding: I begin by using weighted tuning forks, often applied to acupressure points or held near the low energy points. The pure sonic vibration immediately helps calm the nervous system, release mental chatter, and “ground” your energy—connecting you firmly to the earth and the present moment.
- The Reiki Flow: As you relax into the sound vibrations, I begin the Reiki. Connecting to the universal source, I will channel this healing energy through my hands. I work intuitively, often focusing on the areas identified in the scan, your chakras, and the anchor points to bring balance, release blockages, and facilitate deep healing. The energy is gentle, warm, and often brings about a profound state of peace.
- 432 Hz Unweighted Tuning Forks: At the end of the session, I will walk around you with my unweighted tuning fork, as it will pick up any leftover “stuck” energy in your aura so I can remove it.
Step 5: Integration & Closing
After the Reiki flow concludes, I will gently indicate the session is over. We’ll have a brief moment for you to reorient. I may offer a final grounding touch to your shoulders. You are encouraged to drink water and move gently for the next 36 hours. We can briefly discuss any sensations you experienced, and I may offer simple insights or “homework,” such as a color to visualize or an intention to hold. Take notes about how your feel after the session, and we’ll discuss it at your next session.
My Promise to You: Throughout this process, I hold the sacred conduit principle. The energy is divine, flowing through me for your highest good. My psychic insights are offered as a map, but you are always the authority on your own journey. My goal is to provide a safe, empowering container for your healing and self-discovery.
