The Nurturing Wisdom of Goddess Skandamata
On the radiant fifth day of Navaratri, we honor Goddess Skandamata, the Divine Mother in her most tender, nurturing, and fiercely protective aspect. Her name means “Mother of Skanda” (Lord Kartikeya, the God of War), revealing a profound truth: the source of the greatest warrior’s strength is a mother’s boundless love. She embodies the perfect fusion of unconditional love and invincible power.
The Legend: The Mother of the Commander
After her marriage to Shiva, the goddess Parvati manifested as Skandamata to give birth to and nurture Kartikeya, the divine child destined to lead the celestial armies and vanquish the demon Tarakasura.
Her legend emphasizes that true power is born from and protected by pure love. She raised the commander of the gods not just with affection, but with the wisdom, discipline, and spiritual strength he needed to fulfill his cosmic duty. Thus, she is the mother of both the child and the warrior—the nourisher of potential and the source of victorious strength.
Depiction & Symbolism: The Throne of Compassion
She is most often depicted seated serenely on a lotus, holding her infant son Skanda on her lap. She is shown with four arms: two holding lotuses, one in the abhaya mudra (gesture of fearlessness), and one in the varada mudra (gesture of granting boons).
-
The Lotus Seat: Represents purity, spiritual sovereignty, and transcendence over the material world. She is rooted in the mud of worldly existence but remains unstained and enlightened.
-
The Infant Skanda on Her Lap: Symbolizes divine potential nurtured by love. It shows that the highest spiritual power (Kartikeya) is born from and sustained by the Mother’s grace. Her lap is the throne from which the universe is governed with compassion.
-
The Four Arms: Represent the four directions and the four primary aims of human life (Purusharthas): Dharma (righteousness), Artha (prosperity), Kama (desires), and Moksha (liberation). She grants and guides all four.
-
The Lotuses: Symbolize spiritual blossoming, beauty, and fertility of the soul under her care.
Significance: Awakening the Heart Center
Worshipping Skandamata is about awakening and purifying the Anahata Chakra, the heart center. She governs the element of air, representing love, connection, compassion, and balance.
On this fifth day, we invoke her to:
-
Open our hearts to unconditional love, empathy, and forgiveness.
-
Nurture our inner child and spiritual potential with kindness and wisdom.
-
Balance fierce protection with gentle compassion in all our relationships.
-
Receive the strength that flows not from aggression, but from a heart-centered, protective love.
She blesses her devotees with wisdom (the child, Kartikeya, is also the God of Wisdom), harmony in the family, and profound inner peace.
Rituals & Devotion

-
Offering: Bananas or plantains are traditionally offered, symbolizing nourishment, fertility, and the sweetness of a mother’s blessings.
-
Prayer: Worship focuses on gratitude for the nurturing forces in our lives—our mothers, teachers, and the Earth herself. Fasting continues, with an emphasis on foods that are sweet and nourishing.
