This month’s new moon is on July 28th at 1:55pm EST at 11 degrees of Cancer, Pushya nakshatra. This means “to nourish”, and spans from 3.20 to 16.40 degrees of Cancer, and the symbols are a cow’s udder that gives sustenance through milk, the lotus flower, an arrow, and a circle. The deity that rules this lunar mansion is Brihaspati, or Jupiter, “Guru”, who is the priest of the gods, or the Devas. This is the “Star of Nourishment”, and the fixed stars Asellus Australis and Asellus Borealis, “the asses” or donkeys, belong to this nakshatra, and they can denote eye problems, as they are the eyes of the crab of the Cancer constellation. They can also show great intuition, or “third eye” activations that give prophetic dreams, and the ability to see into the future. There is another nebula star between them called Praesepe, or “the manger”, or the donkeys, and represents the third eye chakra. The Praesepe, also known as the Beehive or the Manger, is where the donkeys sleep at night, threatens mischief and blindness and is said to cause disease and disgrace. If the nebula is not visible in a clear sky it presages a violent storm.  As with most of classical astrology much of the effects of the planets, signs, constellations, and fixed stars can only be gleaned through direct observation of their condition in the night sky, which is the sidereal zodiac.

Pushya nakshatra gives great wealth, and the “Pushya Point”, or “yogi point”, in a chart shows whether an individual can actually hold onto the wealth they accumulate. Dhana yogas can show if someone receives wealth, but not if they will hold onto it. So, Pushya and its association with wealth is tied to the idea of cows as indicating abundance, and hence the planet Saturn rules here. He is conservative, and indeed Pushya shows a slow and steady progress towards wealth, no day trading behavior here. As Brihaspati is the ruling deity, we see that educators come from this nakshatra, and they will have a more traditional approach to learning and accumulating wealth.

Mythology and Pushya in a Birth Chart

The mythology of Brihaspati becoming Jupiter is that Shiva saw his good deeds of being a sage and rewarded him with becoming planet Jupiter. Soma, or the Moon god, stole Jupiter’s wife, Tara, and had a child with her. This child is Budh, or the planet Mercury, and Jupiter came to love this child, and took him as his own son. Hence, people that have this nakshatra prominent in their chart will be very family oriented, devotional, and religious. They live by lofty ideals, and sometimes can come off as aloof or arrogant. You can see opulent wealth from this lunar mansion, but this abundance can produce weight gain, as well. This love of philosophy can make a great teacher if they remember to take all sides into consideration, and to stay open-minded, and not let Saturn’s grumpy behavior ruin their abilities to educate.
