We just had a New Moon in Sagittarius, Purva Ashada, on January 2, and this lunar mansion is ruled by Venus. On December 30 Venus retrograde went back into Sagittarius, and that was the day that the Marshall Fire started in Denver, Colorado. Remember that when the Cathedral of Notre Dame burned it was the day that Jupiter retrograde entered Sagittarius. Also, the New Moon lord is Jupiter, and transit Jupiter was giving his 9th aspect to Libra, Swati nakshatra, and Saturn was giving his 10th aspect to Swati. The ruling deity of Swati is Vayu, the wind god, and this Marshall fire was so much worse because of the dry conditions in Colorado, and the wind. Fire is cleansing, it sweeps away old growth so that new life can bloom, but no one wants this to happen to their home. It’s just horrible, and I feel for the victims of this tragedy. Slash and burn is a technique used by indigenous farmers across the globe to nourish the soil, so I am hoping for new opportunities for these people. This Marshall fire investigation into how it started is speculating that it was arson, so we do not know how it started yet, but our prayers go out to all that are affected. There was a snowstorm the day after which helped put out the fire, but impeded rescue workers, as seen through Apas, the deity of Purva Ashada, the goddess of water.
On a personal level, this cleansing fire is getting rid of old deadwood from last year and preparing a fertile ground for new energy to enter your life. You must create a space if you want new things to come to you! Venus is love, so many will feel this transit expressed through personal relationships, but also through what we value. Take a look at what you believe about love, do you think you don’t deserve it, or that it will never happen? Really? You DO deserve the best, so start telling yourself that! Now is the time to unpack all of the negativity lurking in your psyche about your own personal value. Do you value yourself? Venus goes direct at the end of the month, so we have until then to utilize this powerful transit.
For the US this New Moon happened in the 1st house of the birth chart, and as Purva Ashada means “declaration of war”, we see the President Biden had a meeting with Vladimir Putin about his expansion into the Ukraine. Mars is with Ketu still and is in the 12th house of foreign lands and secret enemies for the US, indicating this hostility. The ruling deity of Purva Ashada is Apas, the goddess of water, who has a connection with Varuna, the god of water. Transit Jupiter is in Shatabishak, whose ruling deity is Varuna, so perhaps there is enough water to put out both the fires of war, and wildfires.
In the New Moon chart for Washington DC, the Moon is in the 9th house of higher education, beliefs, luck and fortune, the father, and long-distance travel. People are returning from the holidays, and students are returning to school here in the US, and it’s been nothing short of a nightmare for some people. You see, when a planet is in retrograde things return, and there is a theme of going back or returning in general. So, for Venus that is about our values, and Sagittarius is the sign of higher education. On the East Coast there was a huge snowstorm, so here again Apas and Varuna are involved in the theme of water and putting out fires, but perhaps a bit too much. Flights are getting cancelled due to storms, and the rise of the Omicron variant taking out staff. Having Venus retrograde conjunct the New Moon is a powerful force against us as we are trying to return to our homes and schools.
