December 30/January 1stMercury in Scorpio, Jyeshta (Mercury) is Gandanta at 29 degrees

Happy New Year 2019! We start off the year with Mercury drowning (gandanta) in the sign of Scorpio. Mercury loves this sign because it allows his inquisitive mind to dive deep into the mysteries of life, and he does best in Scorpio’s house, the 8th. Being that it’s in the nakshatra of Jyeshta, which is ruled by the planet Mercury, it means that we have a double whammy with Mercury, and if you’re in the northern hemisphere watch out for lots of rain or snow! Ring in the New Year safely, and call a cab if you go out, as Scorpio is the sign of sex, drugs and rock n’roll, and death. Look to what house is in the sign of Scorpio, where your natal Mercury is, and what houses Mercury rules in your chart to see how this affects you.

*Astronomy Fun Fact:  On New Year’s Eve in the northern hemisphere the fixed star Sirius will be directly overhead!  Sirius is associated with the Goddess Isis in Egyptian mythology, so this is her night!

*Star Knowledge Fun Fact:  The star Sirius is said to be the home of the ancestors of the Hopi Indians of the SouthWest United States.  The Kachinas are said to be the Star Relatives from Sirius, and members of the community dress up in very dramatic costume representations to do ceremonies of remembrance.

Mars and Jupiter in Parivartana Yoga for the Whole Month

A parivartana yoga is simply when two planets are in each other’s signs.  Here we have Mars in Pisces (ruled by Jupiter) and Jupiter in Scorpio (ruled by Mars).  This is a very powerful combination, as Jupiter expands anything he is with.  Mars in Pisces gives power to our dreams and imagination; if you can see it, you can achieve it!  Jupiter gives us hope and optimism for those dreams.  We can always see the bad in a combination, such as this could expand fires and anger, but let’s focus our energy on the positive qualities of this combination.  As they are both in water signs this is an opportunity for moksha, or spiritual liberation, of things that make us angry.  Look to what houses are ruled by the signs Pisces and Scorpio in your chart, and what houses Mars and Jupiter rules (there are two for each sign), to see what areas of your life will be impacted.  As Mars (Mangal) and Jupiter (Brhaspati) are in the same planetary camp of the Devas (angels) when they are in a parivartana yoga with each other they are in a “graha sambandha” or “planetary joining”, which stregthens each other’s cause.  Mars gives us courage, and in Pisces it is the courage to fight for our dreams; Jupiter expands that courage and gives us hope!

January 2ndVenus goes into Scorpio

Venus has been in her moolitrikona sign, or strongest sign, of rulership, Libra, since September 2nd. This is an extremely long period for Venus to occupy one sign, let alone her own sign. She went retrograde for part of it, and this was showing us all of the weaknesses we have in the Venusian areas of love and money. Finally switching robes from silk to leather Venus takes on an edgy vibe in Scorpio. She will be conjunct Jupiter and trining Mars, so as it’s all in water signs it gives a softer edge to the above parivartana yoga; the arts are sure to flourish during this time, as well as teachings of the gurus!  Venus is all about love and connection, so being that it will be joining Jupiter who is in sambandha with Mars this will bring a powerful connection of love to us all.  Look to what house is in the sign of Scorpio, where your Natal Venus is, and what houses Venus rules to see how this will affect you.

January 5th01/05 New Moon/ Partial Solar Eclipse: January 5, 8:41pm; 21 degrees Sagittarius, Purva Ashada (Venus)

This eclipse in Sagittarius I feel is a foreshadowing to the big Annular “Ring of Fire” Solar Eclipse that is taking place on December 26th when 7 planets will be conjunct in Sagittarius. This eclipse in December is being called the “eclipse of the century”, and this eclipse in January is giving us a taste of what is to come. As this is taking place in the nakshatra of Purva Ashada, which is ruled by Venus, we are being reminded that Venus now is in Scorpio and will indicate what direction our attention is being pulled. This eclipse in Sagittarius is taking places 12 houses away from transiting Venus in Scorpio, so be careful of a loss of all things Venusian, i.e. love and money, but look to where Venus is in your chart to see how it will play out. It is conjunct Saturn in Purva Ashada, and Saturn shows us the authority in our lives. Last summer when we saw Saturn retrograde in this sign, it was showing us how we give our authority away, and we saw a rise of beauty brand cults! All Hail the Queen! An eclipse here will reveal the shadow side when we give our authority away to others concerning love, beauty, and money. As Saturn will conjunct Ketu later this year for a long time, there will be a loss of power on a large scale; but also we will be called back (Ketu) to redo some kind of work (Saturn).  It’s not always a negative. Look to what house is in the sign of Sagittarius, where your natal Ketu and Venus are, and what houses are ruled by Venus in your chart to see how this will affect you.

January 6th-February 17thMercury is in Capricorn and combust the Sun

A planet is combust, or “kopa” (angry) when it travels closely to the Sun. As Mercury is close to the Sun it goes combust often, and is not unusal. The Sun gets energized by the planet that is aligning with it, and becomes erratic with solar flares, and the planet is weakened. If Mercury rules your ascendant, Moon or Sun sign you could feel a bit lethargic mentally, and so use this time for meditation to center yourself.

January 15thSun, Mercury and Ketu are conjunct in Capricorn, Uttara Ashada (Sun)

The nakshatra of Uttara Ashada means “latter victory”, and people with this nakshatra prominent are known to be workaholics. Use the energy of these planets to focus your mind, and especially spiritual or metaphysical topics should be interesting to you at this time. Look to what house in your chart is in the sign of Capricorn to see what area of your life needs harnessed to achieve maximum results.

January 19thSun and Saturn are combust in Capricorn, Uttara Ashada (Sun)

Sun and Saturn are natural enemies, so when they come together its’s very tense and awkward. Saturn is the planet of heaviness, hard work, delays, and Father Time, so when his energy is stolen by the Sun we can feel our work authority (Saturn) is being overshadowed by a bigger authority (Sun). In the nakshatra of Uttara Ashada, which is ruled by the Sun, we get a double effect. Look to what house is in the sign of Capricorn in your chart to see how this will affect you.

January 20th: Mercury goes into Capricorn

Mercury, the planet of media and communications of all kinds, likes to be in Capricorn, as this sign gives stability to the mind. Use this energy to get work done, and look to what house is in the sign of Capricorn to see how this will affect your communications.

January 21st: 01/21 Full Moon/Total Lunar Eclipse (Blood Moon): 12:12 AM, 6 Degrees Cancer, Pushya

On this eclipse we have Rahu in Cancer conjunct the Moon; Rahu is getting ready to switch signs in March to Gemini, so I feel this will be a very emotional eclipse. We have Jupiter and Venus in Scorpio making a trine to the Moon, Mars in Pisces making a trine to the Moon, and Mercury sextiling the Moon. Being that it’s a total lunar blood moon eclipse we should see things revealed to us that were hidden in the areas of our life that Cancer rules in our chart.

January 22ndVenus and Jupiter are conjunct in Scorpio, 20-21 degrees Scorpio, Jyeshta (Mercury)

This conjunction will impact the eclipse and direct the energy to our gurus, and for a man it will reveal hidden things about his mate, and for a woman about her mate, as well. As it’s in the nakshatra of Jyeshta, which is ruled by Mercury, we should have excellent communication, and study/research should come easy.

January 26th: Venus is Gandanta in Scorpio

Venus is gandanta (drowning) in the sign of Scorpio, which means we will be very emotional that day.  Just being aware of this can help us to not go overboard with our feelings; just observe.  Venus is conjunct Jupiter in Scorpio and trining Mars in Pisces, so I feel rather than fall prey to our feelings, we should use this time to cleanse our feeling about the past.  Look to where your water houses are in your chart to see what area of life this will affect you, and also look at the moksha houses, 4, 8 and 12 to see how you can be liberated of your suffering.

January 30thVenus goes into Sagittarius

Venus joins the Moon on this day, so this is a nice start to this cycle, as they are both softer planets. Venus in Sagittarius is very creative, and loves to socialize! Use this energy to get inspired, and go out and mingle. Look to what house is in the sign of Sagittarius to see how this transit will affect you.
