December 14th, 12:17pm-New Moon Total Solar Eclipse: 28’59” degrees sidereal Scorpio, Jyeshtha
This December 14th at 12:17pm EST we have a New Moon Total Solar Eclipse at 28’59” of Scorpio, Jyeshta nakshatra, which means “the eldest”. It spans from 16.4 to 30 degrees of Scorpio, and the symbols are a circular amulet, an umbrella, and an earring. The deity that rules this nakshatra is Indra, the chief of the gods, and this is called “The Chief or Elder Star”. The star that rules this lunar mansion is Antares, the “Heart of the Scorpion”, which means “rival of Mars”, and is a military and political star giving a drive for powerful control and honors, but with sudden possible loss. The planet that rules Scorpio is Mars, the planet that rules Jyeshta is Mercury, and Antares is listed by Ptolemy as of the nature of Mars and Jupiter, so that makes these transit planets particularly important today.
Mythology and Jyeshta in a Birth Chart
Jyeshta was the eldest of the 27 sisters who are all married to Soma, the Moon god; they represent the 27 nakshatras, or lunar mansions on the ecliptic. She felt betrayed and jealous when Soma favored Rohini, the opposite nakshatra in Taurus that is the “Star of Ascent” and is ruled by Aldebaran; these two stars have been used historically by military leaders to ascertain their power in war.
As the myth implies, there is betrayal and abandonment with natives of this nakshatra, and as the eldest one, they have duty and seniority, and are very protective of their loved ones. They possess great wisdom, maturity, and experience, but they need to remember that power does not equal authority. There must be respect for those who have power in order for them to have authority; without that the power can turn into manipulation and tyranny. These people can be the “grumpy Eeyore” types who suffer from low self-esteem, as with so much responsibility there comes stress, and arrogance. As the eldest they know how to deal with power and others of authority, and they may have extremes in their life of poverty and hardships. They love to be reclusive, have just a few good friends, and also enjoy studying the occult, as Mercury is the ruler and indicates alchemy and hidden powers.

Fixed star Antares, Alpha Scorpii, is a 1.0 magnitude, fiery red and emerald green star in the Heart of the Scorpion, Scorpius Constellation. The traditional name Antares is from the Ancient Greek Άντάρης, which means anti-Ares, or the rival of Mars, because of its similar color to the red planet. In Babylon, it was Urbat in the asterism Hurrus, Divine Protector. The Babylonian title brings us to this star’s role as one of the four Archangel stars: Fomalhaut – Gabriel, Aldebaran – Michael, Regulus – Raphael, and now Antares – Uriel. It causes malevolence, destructiveness, liberality, broad-mindedness, evil presages, and danger of fatality and makes its natives rash, ravenous, headstrong, and destructive to themselves by their own obstinacy.
Antares in the constellation of Scorpio is, as its name Ant-ares says, of Martian nature, but to this Mars nature, powers of Mercury, Jupiter and also Saturn are added. Antares makes people tough, belligerent, and pugnacious. This is an important star for military personnel and is said to convey mental alertness, strategic ability, and courage and to make daredevils, especially if tied up with the Midheaven, Ascendant, Sun, or Jupiter. If associated with Mars, courage is said to become foolhardiness, leading to increased dangers.
Natives with this particular configuration have to be prepared at all times for sudden incidents and unforeseen events and potential accidents. According to tradition, Antares is of violent character and is credited with being significant for a violent death, either in battle or by process of law. On the other hand, danger may come about by fire, weapons, or machinery.
Ptolemy classified Antares as a Mars-Jupiter type, and all astrologers have noted it as an indicator of success in war, and high command therein, but not forgetting that one’s opponent may have the support of Aldebaran, the star opposite to this one, and star of Archangel Michael, commander of the Heavenly Host itself! What does tend to show up when these two stars are both engaged on the horoscope is a conflict, either the starting date of the war or the natal charts of the leaders, is that peace rarely ensues before the total and crushing defeat of one side or the other. It is a war that escalates to huge proportions, even to a world scale, as aggressive Mars is precedence over expansive Jupiter would imply.
War is not the only outlet for the symbolism of Antares, and it indicates just as often the individual’s great store of energy and optimism to undertake ventures which others could not attempt. Transit Analysis
The November 14th New Moon Solar Eclipse in Scorpio, Jyeshta takes place at 12:17am EST, and for Washington, DC it is occurring in the 10th house of government at this time. We have several planets gandanta today: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Ketu, and Mars. This is a karmic knot that we must unravel before we go onto the next level, and it makes us feel like we are drowning. The ruler of Scorpio is Mars, and he is sitting in the 2nd house of money and speech in the sign of Pisces, which is a weak sign for him, but he is in a trine aspect with the New Moon today which is almost exact, so this indicates anger that has been suppressed will come out in the form of words and communications. Mercury rules Jyeshta and he is in Scorpio, which is a very strong sign for him, indicating deep research into secrets and mysteries, and as this is an eclipse with Ketu there we will definitely be finding out some hidden secrets with documents and communications that the government has been hiding at this time. In graha yudda, or planetary war, two planets are within one degree of each other, and traditionally only five planet are included: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, so this is not technically a planetary war, as Venus is at 4 degrees and Mercury is at 25 degrees. In Western astrology it is called a stellium when you have four or more planets conjunct, so either way this is going to be felt intensely.
Mars is also gandanta, which means it is at the end of a water sign about to go into a fire sign, and it feels like you are emotionally drowning. “Gand” means “knot” and “anta” means “end”, so this is a very well placed karmic knot that you must unravel before you go onto the next cycle. For the US birth chart this is in the 4th house of the homeland, and indeed there is a lot of anger as a result of the election, and also the pandemic. This gandanta energy is also showing up in the fires that are raging out west, and an increase in the number of deaths as a result of the coronavirus.
We are also now officially in a kala sarpa yoga, the “serpent of time”, which means all of the planets are between Rahu and Ketu and events that happen during this period are destined or fated. Mercury, Moon, and the Sun are all just a few degrees beyond Ketu, but this still counts as a yoga as they are in the same sign. There are 12 types of naga (serpent) kala sarpa patterns according to the house meanings, and in this case, we have Rahu in the 4th house, which is the naga Sankhapala. This indicates the home and a strong nesting instinct, and as the 4thhouse is the homeland in mundane astrology, it can suggest establishing ethnic boundaries oftentimes with a religious ceremony. “If we come under attack, pull the wagons in a circle” is the sentiment. As the 4thhouse is also the house of happiness, there is an emphasis upon mental health, and we know that is critical for everyone because of the pandemic. Many states are going into quarantine again, and this naga is showing us that we will be at war with the restrictions and authority figures who enforce them. They have now reversed the decision to keep the children at home for school, as the science is showing us that the infection rate is low with this age group, and there has been severe mental health consequences. In a birth chart this can imply physical ailments in the chest (Anand).
In the US birth chart this solar eclipse is taking place in the 12th house of foreign lands and secret enemies that you cannot see behind your back. Transit Pluto has been in our 1sthouse and on the 30th will go into Capricorn, and this will conjunct our Pluto for a Pluto return that will be exact in 2023. The Jupiter Saturn conjunction on the 20thhappens in our 2nd house as well, and this is massive change, growth, and a point of manifestation. Pluto represents darkness as Hades is the god of the underworld, so this whole process of transformation is starting now with this solar eclipse and this will set the pace for the Pluto Return. Rahu is in our 6th house of health, indicating that there will be a pushback to authority (Jyeshta) that is asking us to quarantine because of the pandemic. Mental health is at stake, and we are torn between staying in and going out. Neptune is on the lagna for the solar eclipse in DC, and it is also at the fulcrum of the kala sarpa yoga. Neptune indicates mental illness, and many who have lost their businesses are suffering tremendous anxiety and depression, and the suicide rate is higher than ever.
Transit Rahu is in Mrigashira nakshatra and is in the 6th house of the US birth chart, and the naga of the 6th house is Mahapadma, who is thought of as a mercenary guard, security officer for many things. He is skilled at manipulation of unstable situations that could turn either way, and there is an emphasis on accidents, conflict management, health, illness, injuries, opposition, and physical challenges of every kind (Anand). Transit Rahu is almost conjunct the star Rigel at 22’42” Taurus, which is one of the most fortunate stars in the sky indicating benevolence, honor, riches, happiness, glory, renown and inventive or mechanical ability. This may be our hidden saving grace today.
In six days we have the Jupiter Saturn conjunction which only happens once every 20 years, and every 120 years in the same sign. When these two grahas come together there will be a massive change. This is in the 12th house of the eclipse’s chart for DC, which is the house of foreign lands and secret enemies. It is the house of seclusion and indicates this quarantine we are in because of the resurgence of the coronavirus.

December 2020 New Moon Total Solar Eclipse Through the 12 Signs

When we have 5 planets together in close degree if it is not a planetary war, as we discussed, then it is instead when the Sun is involved a combustion of planets. The Sun usually wins, but here Ketu wins. You see, the Sun is the superstar of our solar system, so when he is conjunct other planets, he literally outshines them, and they are all in his shadow. Rahu and Ketu are shadow points that contain secrets hidden from our view, and when the eclipses happens that shadow is illuminated, and we see what was previously undisclosed. This gives the nodes immense power and makes them win over the Sun in combustion.
We have Mercury, Moon, and Ketu combust the Sun at the end of Scorpio, and Venus is at the beginning, so she is technically not combust the Sun at this time. The effects of this are: confusion, rejection, and past life karmic patterns, but it is a very spiritual combination which brings about learning detachment, self-restraint, and getting to the root cause of suffering, which brings about healing. The nakshatra of Jyeshta is about power, authority and the elders, so this theme combined with the combustion, eclipse and gandanta energy of Mars is asking us, who are we giving our power to, and who has authority in our lives? Also, the June 5thlunar eclipse of this year was also in Jyeshta, so themes and events from that time will resurface now, but in a bigger way as the lunar eclipse is a foreshadowing of the solar eclipse. The George Floyd murder happened then, so we can see how the authority of the police has been brought into scrutiny since then and shows us what happens when power is abused. The Electoral College is meeting today, and what was previously hidden concerning election fraud will be revealed, whether it is real or fake, but either way authority will be questioned.
