In Jyotish, also known as Vedic astrology, the Navamsa chart is a key tool for understanding the deeper, soul-level aspects of a person’s life. The D9 Navamsa chart, the “chart of the spouse”, or the “Fruit of the Tree”, is seen as one of the most important divisional charts in Jyotish, as it provides deep insights into one’s marital life, spiritual growth, and overall destiny. It examines the strength of the 9th house of luck, fortune, blessings, and is used to analyze the second half of life.
In this article we will examine the meaning of the D9, and briefly touch upon the house meanings, as well. This is not meant as a “how to” article, but rather positioning the D9 in relation to other divisional charts; in this way, we can see the full breadth of the Vargas, and show clients that follow Western astrology one way that Jyotish is different. Remember that a firm birth time is essential to use this chart, or any chart beyond the D1 in Jyotish.
Calculating the Navamsa
The term Navamsa is derived from the combination of the words ‘Navam’, meaning nine, and ‘Amsa’, meaning division. Therefore, Navamsa refers to the ninth division. In simpler terms, it is the 1/9th division of a rashi. Since each rashi consists of 30 degrees, it is divided into nine parts to determine the navamsa division, with each navamsa being 3 degrees 20 minutes. To calculate for 12 rashis, we multiply 12 by 9, resulting in 108 navamsas. It is believed that the D9 Navamsa chart reveals the karmic patterns and lessons that a person is destined to encounter in this lifetime, and it plays a crucial role in understanding the overall destiny and purpose of one’s life. Jyotish software programs can do this for you.
Usages of D9
One of the main uses of the D9 Navamsa chart is in predicting the quality of one’s marriage and relationships, and also give us clues about the spouse’s personality. It is said to provide valuable insights into the compatibility between partners, as well as the potential challenges and blessings that may arise in a marriage. By examining the placement of planets in the D9 Navamsa chart, Jyotish astrologers can gain a deeper understanding of the dynamics at play in a person’s romantic and marital life.
Moreover, the D9 Navamsa chart is also used to assess a person’s spiritual growth and evolution, “the fruit of the tree” of the D1. It is believed to reveal the soul’s journey and the spiritual lessons that an individual is meant to learn in this lifetime, their dharma. By analyzing the planets and their placements in the D9, Jyotish astrologers can offer guidance on how to navigate and make the most of the spiritual opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
D9 As Indicator of 2nd Half of Life
The D9 is often used to gain insight into a person’s later years, specifically the second half of their life. In Vedic astrology, it is believed that the Navamsa reflects the true nature and spiritual potential of an individual, because of the spiritual growth we attain in the 1st half of life. Just as two married people who grow old together begin to look and think alike, the Navamsa can be read as the spouse, or the individual in question. In fact, it can be read as the main chart after the age of 40.
Parashara said that if a planet is weak in the D1, but strong in the D9, that planet will give results in the 2nd half of life. If we take the D1 7th house Lord, and see where it is placed in the Navamsa, we can get an idea about the personality of the spouse.
